I just want to confirm that this is a reversed thread? It’s from a CB550 1976 F1

Yes. 100%. The special tool that locates in all four holes works well. If you make a tool that just locates in two it can be hard.
There may be stake marks in the holes that need to be lightly drilled first.

Made my own tool. Always worked for me. Don't bother to stake. Some use a drop of loctite on assembling. I don't see why you would need anything, unless you plan to ride much in reverse. ;)

Yeah ordered the tool after a bike shop failed to get it loose.

Makes me wonder: was the shop aware of:
a) the stakes Honda made and/or
b) the reverse thread

They knew it was a reversed thread but I think they didn’t use any heat and they didn’t drill out the knicks

+1 to the correct tool. I finally bought one a few months ago. Inserting into my cordless hammer dril (not really that powerful), allows me to stand over the hub (between my feet). Pushing down and keeping it square, those retainers just zip out! Really worth a few bucks!!
