Mecum next week, Barret Jackson for me
« on: January 21, 2023, 02:39:41 PM »
I'm seeing 18 cb750's on the list, it should define the market for the year. We were invited to go along to Barret Jackson in Scottsdale next week so it's another year I won't be at Mecum. My buddy wants a 53 suburban that they have listed.
Oddly, I was asked to go to both, but I bought the tickets for Arizona first.

Don your such a tease !  Here is a link, they say 2,000 motorcycles. See American Picker Mike Wolfe is dumping a bunch of "as found". Lot of bikes coming out of many other collections also. Wonder if they are looking ahead at the overall economy and thinking its time to sell sell sell. Hmmm  https://www.mecum.com/auctions/las-vegas-motorcycle-2023/

It can be time to sell while prices still are relatively high.

But plenty of good looking bikes of same model can reduce the price. Maybe more sellers than buyers.

A restored bike where most parts are replaced with NOS parts, engine taken apart completely and fully restored.
Tank w side covers 4-4 new from Yamiya and DSS.

That bike might not get the money back even if most job is free of charge.
Head job with guide/valve replacement and rebore at a shop.

Not many of these bikes will get new cush rubbers in primary hub.
I have 2 hubs done in Germany that will be shipped back to me next week.
Total ca 230€ for both including all shipping. They are riveted as stock.

I'm wondering if "as found" will become a popular condition for resale. Mike Wolf may have invented a new category.  I'm usually not a big fan of the way I find them though.

"As found" to avoid falling into the money pit ;)
If not much used and stored dry can be a good bike.

It'll be interesting to see how it goes this year. As far as I remember, last year's one didn't deliver many surprises, though I do remember a nice K7 or K8 made a load of money, as did some Hayabusas. Can anyone remember any other highlights?

Interesting mix of Honda's. @ of the rare CX650 Turbos, 3 Runes. Only one 'cafe' 750 that I saw. For the most part the bikes are all mostly stock. Lots of twin shock CBX's. It will be interesting to see if prices fall from the past couple of years.

Yes, lots of twin shock CBXs, and not only CX turbos but the Yam, Suzuki and Kawa ones too. Lots of Kawa triples as ever. And more VF1000Rs than I have ever seen anywhere before, they are pretty rare here in UK but not necessarily very desirable. Price comparisons would be interesting, does anywhere publish them?

If you register with Mecum and Barrett Jackson (which is free) you can usually see the results.

Yes you can watch the live stream and view results, but I can't find a way to view last year's/earlier years' full results, the only thing I can spot is the top 10 bikes sold for each year. Maybe I'm missing a tab or something?

There's a firm that sells a price guide for classic bikes that's based on actual results, but I don't know if they actually list all the auctions in it.

A few sohcs went through yesterday, an auto for $3k, a nice brown 73 and a nice red 71 each for $7k, a very nice blue 70 for $8k,  all those were stock. Also a lightly cafed 73 for $4k.   It would be interesting to attend it and see the bikes' conditions in detail

Definitely some interesting results so far. A '76 Goldwing LTD went for bargain basement $1400. A good looking Road King Classic and an Electra Classic sold $4,950 each and a Yamaha 850 triple Midnight Special for an astonishing $33k. I also saw that a Tri Hawk sold. The Tri hawk is a 3 wheel car that was designed and manufactured by my best friend's dad and sold from 1982-1985. Harley Bought the company in '85 then killed it.

I don't quite get the price of that Goldwing, another one (lot T1), a very nice unrestored 1978, made nearly $14k. Maybe there was something wrong with the 76 bike that the photos don't show.

The SOHCs from Thursday that I can spot are a nice 400f for $6k, very nice 350f for $10.5k, 750F2 cafe at $11k (surprisingly), and a very restored K6 750 $18k.

Kawas sold well, several H1s, H2s & Z1s at $27k , one early Z1 $55k too, but the overall crazy prices must go to  a couple of Flying Dragon 450s, $38k and $71k.

Sounds like the market is still strong on the upper level "good stuff". Bodes well for us still.

Not surprising, these bikes are nearly impossible to find on the market for "reasonable" prices.

Here are Friday's SOHCs, bit of a repeat of the above, I'd noted them down before coming on here, so sorry for the duplication

Nice 74 750 $7k
Odd 77 400 $12k - claimed to be a "highly original 77" but looks like a 76 tank on it and had some other odd things too
Stunning 70 750  $16k  & another for $16k
Not very tidy 70 750 $9k
Another stunning 70 750 $14k
Very nice original 73 750 $8k
Very nice original 74  (6k miles) cheap at $5k
Very nice 350  $7k
Nice 76 750 $6k, and a 75 the same
Nice 750A $4k

A few other interesting prices

76 RM250  $19k
CX650 turbo- $24k
1920s BMWs $100k-$220k
Rickman Honda DOHC $12k
Dunstall Commando $20k
RZ350 $27k !

One further observation, prices seem stronger as the week goes on. If it was allowed you could profit by buying on Tuesday/Weds and selling later in the week...

The flying dragons that sold… the CB450 went for $38k and a CB350 flying dragon went for $71k. Pretty insane prices for dealer installed kits that cost them $50 back in the day trying to stimulate sales of the bikes that had been languishing in showrooms.

Wonder what the prices of tank and side cover sets will be now when they show up on eBay? Crazy prices like the insanity of BaT.

The turbo CX500 and CX650s that sold at Mecum did extremely poorly.

It is extremely odd results across the board.
Clearly some sales are fueled by passion of a few bidders.

My favorite thing at Barret-Jackson was the Superformance Cobra/GT40 display outside, 6 to 8 GT40's and over a dozen Cobras, they even had a real Corvette Grand Sport and a Cobra Daytona coupe.
One day, Tues maybe? they sold some bikes, a few Honda minibikes brought the usual crazy prices. $3500 to 5K. My wife's pick was a 69 Carmaro in clean white with a gray hockey stripe, I think it brought $177K.
The cab overs, Bronco's, and 59-64 chevys were going at amazing prices. I think the 4-door early Bronco custom was around $700K, with over 5,000-man hours in building it.
On Wed there were some decent looking cars that went in the $40-50K range. A pretty nice 64 GTO was in that range. The fricken gen2 Batmobile had a real turbine engine in it. HOLY JET EXHAUST BATMAN!
If I don't get covid after this, I missed a pretty good chance.

Don, hope you, wife and friends manage to dodge the bullet on getting sick and have a safe trip home.
It is an experience to see that kind of collection and the money some spend on such collections.
