Ross’s ‘77 CB750
« on: January 16, 2023, 01:28:23 PM »
If you read my introduction, you’ll know I’m fairly familiar with Z1 900s and KZ900/1000s.  I sold off my remaining Zs to purchase a modern bike, a Yamaha Tracer900.

I’m retired and was getting a bit bored so I was looking for a project that hopefully wouldn’t cost too much money.  I found a ‘77 CB750 that needed revival and new home.

I live in BC but this is an American bike with 23,000 miles on the clock.  It’s a pretty complete bike.  Not running when I got it, the carbs were stuck solid.  The side covers are broken (one in several pieces) but possibly repairable.  Needs a seat cover.  Does anyone know the difference between a ‘77 and ‘78 seat?  I can only find aftermarket covers for a ‘78, although the bike came with a couple of other seats, a king/queen and slower style stepped seat.  Needs all of the usual stuff, tires, chain/sprockets, brakes, paint, etc, etc, etc.  Everything electrical works except the horn.

I took the carbs off, ultrasonic cleaned them, reassembled and installed them.  They're quite stiff though, so perhaps I've done something wrong.

Numbers 1 and 4 carb needles weren't seating and gas poured out of the overflow tubes.  Managed to get them working without removing the carbs from the bike.

Took the battery out of the Yamaha.  After a few tries it fired briefly.  Ran the battery flat trying to start it again.

Batteries are getting expensive.  $113 at Edmonds Battery.  Not in stock until Wednesday.
I'll charge the Yamaha battery and try again later.

Woo Hoo!  So I charged the Yamaha battery up again.  Bike fired, and with some coaxing actually ran!  Stalls on throttle tip in.  Not sure what to do about that.  Idles ok.  Stumbles at higher rpm.  All four cylinders firing.  No smoke!!  Charging system is working as normal.

Front brake is really squishy but getting better, hoping not to need master cylinder rebuild.

Ross.... I live just outside Toronto and have both a K7 and K8. The seat on your K7 is definitely unique to that year. It’s a more traditional shape. The K8 has a sculpted out section for the front, and the rear is higher. Not sure who makes a cover, try EBay?

The carbs are noticeably stiffer than earlier styles. I’ve played with different return springs to soften them up a bit. I buy my Batteries from Kapsco Moto, here in Ontario. Check out their website. They are about CDN$60 and ship anywhere. Because they are sealed, totally non hazardous, they ship via Canada Post! They have one battery that fits all SOHC cb750s. I use them in all my bikes and some are +5 years old and still going strong. Put your year and model in and it will come up. Failing that, let me know and I’ll find the number. Cheers, John D.

In this photo, K8 is in the lead, K7 on the right. Easy to see the seats are different.

Thanks for the responses, guys.

Looks like my seat is a ‘78.  I can get an inexpensive cover from Vintage750.

When I get this bike rideable, I’d like to do a 530 conversion.  Anyone know a source for sprockets and chain?  I calculate that I need a 18T front sprocket and a 49T rear.   Not sure how many chain links.

I have the carbs on and the bike starts and runs pretty well.  No smoke.  Haven’t done a compression test, but I think it’s good, all pipes even temperature. I did a real good bench sync, so should be close.  Idle mixture screws all 1 1/2 turns out from bottom.  I’ve run it on and off for about 45 minutes hoping that running some gas through would clean out any remaining varnish.  Boggs and stalls upon quick throttle tip in.  Accelerator pump maybe?  Any thoughts?  Otherwise, once warm, and off idle, it revs pretty well.

This bike is the first one I’ve worked on that has an accelerator pump.

I’m borrowing a friend’s carb balancer and digital tach tomorrow so I can do a good sync and attempt to set the idle mixture (I’ve never been good at that).

Also looking for good used side covers.

Do the carb sync. I always do an accurate bench sync and then am surprised when the gauges go on.

Take it for a ride. Full throttle under load might help. An old trick is to pull full chock while running at 4,000 rpm in 2nd gear. Closing the air off will “suck” lots of fuel through and perhaps clear a minor blockage.

Gonna be a while until I ride it.  My first goal was to start it.  Second was to get the brakes functional.  Then steering, swing arm, and wheel bearings.  But I’ll certainly try that.  I may pull the cabs off and revisit the accelerator pump.  I didn’t replace any of those bits.  Nor did I check it when I put it back together since I didn’t dismantle anything other than the bits in the carbs themselves.  These are the first carbs I’ve worked on that have a pump.  Z1s and KZs have enrichers not chokes and no pump.

On my '78 K I did the 530 chain conversion, went with sprockets from JT.  Have not installed yet, bike is still in pieces.

Here is the info from Randakks cycle:

Sprocket - Drive - Front - 530 - JTF 338 - 17 Tooth - CB650

Sprocket - Drive - Rear - 530 - JTR 284 - 48 Tooth - CB750

Use a fan pointing on the front of the motor when running it to keep it cool [I know you are in BC]

For side covers, post a thread in parts wanted or check ebay...

Ross.... what month/year is on your vin plate and does it have this fabricated engine mount in the front left (next to the oil filter housing)? It’s only found on K7s and not all of them.....
