Aftermarket Oil Filter Kits
« on: January 25, 2023, 08:40:47 AM »
This K8 had a small oil weep, below the filter housing. Cleaned it all up today (annual oil change) and when comparing both the “0” rings I’d used, to the items in the HONDA parts kit, they were both visibly thicker in cross section. Problem solved, lesson learned.

Interesting, need to watch mine when I get it together.

BTW, how many washers do you use around the oil filter, is it just one between the filter and spring?

I've noticed that too. Especially with the O-rings that come with the Emgo filters.

Just one. The spring drops in first, washer, filter. They’re often missing as they stick to the filter and get thrown away!

I have never had a leak with the HiFlo after market oil filter kit for the CB 750. The O rings seem perfect

From the photo of the K8, my hat is off to anyone over 60 years old that can get down on the floor to change oil on a motorcycle. Were it  not for the HF lift and a strong young neighbor to hoist the bike up there and then raise it on the center stand, my CB 750's would just have to deal with it

70 in a couple of months! Two lift tables, but the Rickman is on the small one and the Sandcast on the larger one. I thought about it, but swapping it out seemed like even more effort. My buddy Gary’s ‘75 GL1000 is next, for some overdue service work. When he’s here, we’ll put it “up” for sure.

I can't understand why so many won't just use genuine Honda Parts. Ever since 1980, when I've bought my bike I've used the Honda filters as precribed by Honda, every second oil change.
Every experienced mechanic at a Honda workshop back then could tell/demonstrate you why genuine Honda parts were superior: breakerpoints, filters, carb parts, brake parts, cables, clutch plates and springs etc, etc. To save a buck on an oil filter. Why risk it?

I buy the filters for my KLR650 from one EBay vendor. Six come shrink wrapped together, in the same boxes, same part number, identical filter my local dealer sells. I get six for a couple of dollars more than the dealer retails one. When I showed him, he ordered 60. Sometimes it’s OK.....

Years ago I read an excellent article in one of my auto racing magazines by a fellow who dismantled all the different filters available for his Porsche. He also happened to be an engineer and worked in a testing lab! I don’t remember all the details, or all the criteria, but at that time the WIX filter was the overall winner.

I use lots of filters and have used Emgo, Hi Flow, and oem.  Never had a leak, rarely even bother changing the o-rings as some of these filters don't come with new o-rings.

Many oil filters have too thin o-rings.
I bought some extra, 50 pack. Plus a Honda stock to compare with.

At 70 now, with the low miles I do, I change oil and filter every spring. Getting down on the floor isn't so bad but getting back up is less fun every year.
I have used OEM filters as a rule but have tried Amzoil and others. No problems so far, I compare o-ring size with what's in the cover and re-use the old one if the new one is thinner cord, there have been a few. The small ones have always been ok although some aftermarket filters do not include it. I'm not worrying about cost for a once per year expense. I draw the line at $20.00/litre imported full synthetic bike oil like Motul though... Amzoil has been good but I use Rotella T6 5-40 now with no issues. Oil pressure is 60psi (pump bypass pressure) cold and 5-10 hot at idle, 40+ hot at riding rpm. I have a gauge at the gallery plug. With "normal" oil the pressure was
lower at hot idle but the oil light never comes on with engine running. 400-F.

I measured the o-ring with K&N oil filter. 4.0mm.
4.5mm needed. But I believe the filter is good.
Ordered 10 filters from Germany for a relatively good price.

I reuse old o-ring, at least 2 filter changes.
Tighten the oil bolt too hard might ruin the rubber.
