Ever take your CB on a long trip?
« on: March 10, 2007, 04:29:51 PM »
Hello Everyone,

I asked in the Feedback section if a Touring section could be added to these forums, and Glenn graciously obliged, so now there is Tour Reports board under Owners' Club Forums.

I was really hoping that people could post information and stories about their own touring experiences, as travelling by vintage motorcycle is surely a specialized endeavour, and I'm dying to hear about others' trips, as I plan on doing a few myself.

So please head over to the Tour Reports board and post your experiences... and prove that your bike is fun for more than just wrenching and showing!

I took a trip with a colleague of mine (he rides a 2005 R1) from SW mass up to Lake Champlain and back. Only about 500 miles over about two and a half days. Only issue was a sticking caliper piston on my front brake. nice scenery and happily good weather. we're planning a trip to either west virginia or to maryland this summer.

Hi Hym...

Did you have that cafe faring on your bike for the trip?  I'm considering getting one of those to help cut the wind on the highway, but I'd like to know if it gives enough protection to sit fully upright.

My uncle owns a motel near Lake George, so I know the region pretty well.  The roads are pretty fantastic around there.

You and your friend must have made an odd couple, him with his modern sportbike and you with your ancient street bike.  Did you have any trouble keeping up?

I went on a all day trip around Ohio on my CB400F. 422miles to be exact.

I would like to drive out of state, but I really don't feel comfortable driving something this old.

Reason, what if you break down and you need just one part FAST! Well, I think the newer your bike is, the more of a chance you have
of getting that one part on the spot.

My rides:
75' 76' Honda CB400F Super Sports
86' Honda XR600R for Street Madness
84' Honda Interceptor VF500

Past Rides:
80' Honda CX500C Fully Dressed
81' Honda CB650C very nice!
83' Kawasaki KZ550 A3
78' Hondamatic 400 Hawk
80' 81' 82' Honda GL500 Silverwing Insterstate

300 miles a day, 5 days a week was a long trip. A 736 motor built from junk. Pistons and rings from all over the barn ;D All new gaskets and seals, everything else was pulled from buckets and broken motors incluning an Action Fours cam and spring kit. 11k
rpm was hit repeated...... dailey. I had that engine for over 4 years.

1200 miles in one day was the longest trip I can recall. But I haven't got my "Iron Butt Award" yet. Maybe soon?

Many trips. I can remember the destinations, but not the mileage. Never, ever had a problem. Just gas, check tires, lube and adjust chain. Most of the trips was with my wife on back and with other couples on 750's . I think the farthest from home was around 800 miles one way. 500 mile trips one way were not uncommon though. This was back in the mid to late 70's. We were all sitting behind Windjammers, etc. back then.

For what it's worth, in 2002 I blew out the countershaft oil seal (at 70 mph on the interstate ...  8) ) on my 2001 Suzuki SV650S about 800 miles from home. Took 2 months to get the $4 part in.

I've never had trouble finding parts for my SOHC-4s.

Hello Rob,

The fairing in the pic is called a viper. a few of the suppliers in the FAQ on parts have them. and as always , ebay.

I put in a fairing support bent from a single piece of thin bar steel from the hardware store; it gave me a place to mount two driving lights at the bottom. you have to cut out the rear of the windscreen on the brake MC side with standard handlebars.

70-75 mph I was fine, eighty for sustained periods was possible, but just when I'd begin to feel cocky, he'd fall back and zip by at 110 or so...

age seemed to be the most dominant determinant in who asked who questions when we would stop.

we've done the "twistys" around bear mountain, NY and the area near West Point.

Thanks to pddpimp for mentioning that link - Boston - Mexico 2001 (16,000 miles, 2 months, unfaired stock CB750). Also see my other trips in my signature file: Easy Rider Trip 2004 (6500 miles, 16 days with 10 other SOHC forum riders from all over the world), European SOHC Vacation (5500 miles, 3 weeks) etc etc....the SOHC bikes are great to tour on :-)

Coming next year - hopefully arrange the Ride the Rockies SOHC Ride - Riding the length of the Rockies (Montanna - Mexico type idea - get on and off the ride where you like. No firm route yet (as usual) but just an idea. Would be July or August 2008.

cheers

Hey Hym,

So does that faring do a good job of deflecting the wind?  With my fairly high bars, I sit almost completely upright.  I need a faring that blocks enough wind to make this postion comfortable.

I ride the crap out of my bike all over and she is setup just as she was in 1975, no fairing, or bags. I find that everything else is livable as long as your seat is good and mine was an nos stocker with really good foam. If I have to go two up then I take the 1978 K seat and bolt it on to my bike (previous owner welded mounts for the 78 K seat to the frame) because it is bigger and a little more comfy for passengers.

I was going to ride to DC on march 31st but that has been pushed back to april 14. Still going to log some heavy miles though.

yes, Rob, the fairing and windscreen do a fine job of deflecting without much if any vibration. Be careful with the windscreens though, I had to replace two because of very low speed tip-overs--they seem to be pretty fragile.

I take those twistys at Bear Mountain about every week during the season. I live about 20 minutes from there. Very nice riding.

Last Oct. I took a solo 2000+ mile trip from Mo. to Phillidephia , Im 64 years old and ride a 76 cb750 that I bought new in 76. It now has 56000 miles on the clock..  I returned via skyline drive and the blue ridge parkway, and drew comments where ever I met other riders..I was doing 500 mile days on the interstate without too much discomfort . My only mishap was a stock sparkplug boot disengrating,  which I cured with  5000 wraps of electrical tape ( I havent gotten around to replacing it yet)  Keep the oil changed and these things run forever.

Hey all well in 2004 my sister and I  left the great state of Maine  and  did our annuall trip to Laconia N.H. for bike week her second or third my umpteenth but this one was differant when we were done our three day stay in N H  we got up sunday morning in  Concord  N. H.  a buddies place  thanx Chris and headed for Niagra Falls WOW!!! what a trip we did  an average of 250 miles a day Oh  Karen is rideing a 1974 750K and me Im on my 1973 750 K    we had a two man tent sleeping bags and pillows with us  the one night actually in Niagra Falls we did stay in a little cabin, and it did rain that night  up and off the next day traveled till  bout midnight  gotta watch for the deer  saw a few dead on the roadside and had to hit the brakes once because of one.  well we ended up sleeping  under the stars that night  no tent  but throuhout the trip we stayed at campgrounds and we  were gonna ambush a younger bro in Ruttland Vt. only problem was he was in Manchester N.H. (didnt get the job in Vt.)  One of my favorites was the little fferry ride we had to take to get back to Vt. well while I was talking to a couple of guys with a nice 1968 chevy pickup truck hot rod Sis was helping some sweet old ladies on our bikes so they rode them across the river VIA the ferry so  after a brief phione call with  younger brother  aaaanyway we go  back to  N.H. stayed at his motel room that night hot shower cols beer yeah its all good  then back to Maine we were gone just a week 1600 miles and a quart of oil a piece and like one of my stickers on a chain gaurd somewhere its not the destination its the journy even tho  the falls were spetacular its just unbelievable the ride out there and back thank Sis love ya!!!

Me and a friend rode our bikes from Costa Mesa, CA to Yosemite, about 400 miles?  Me on my CB350F cafe and he on his CB550 with full faring and cruiser bars (he had recently traded my dad a Datsun wagon for the bike, my dad figured that the commute to Downey every day would catch up with him).  Left at 5am (the Grapevine was freezing with 30 mph headwinds), made a stop in Solvang for lunch at my Grandparents, arrived in Yosemite around 4pm.  Boy was my neck stiff after that ride, but fun and a ride to remember.

Several years later I put cruiser bars on my CB350F and rode to San Francisco with a friend.  It took us 12 hours.  Ouch!
