Stolen 80 CBX - unrestored
« on: June 15, 2017, 11:47:30 AM »
Yar, lightning struck a couple of weeks ago, in the bad way.

My black 6x12 vee nose Wells Cargo box trailer was stolen from in front of my shop, and inside of it were three bikes, an XS650, a CT70, and this 1980 CBX.

It is as you can see in rough and unrestored condition, without bodywork, exhaust, or carburetors, but it was original, undamaged and unmolested, and is a Japan built bike, same as my black 80. This was going to be a faithful original restoration, so I am as you can imagine, pretty bummed.

Please help me if you can. I am renewing my own "I buy old bikes" post on our local Craigslist sites and my pal Mike is doing the same near El Paso, just to see if it turns up like that. Other pals that got the word on Facebook are keeping their eyes peeled too. Here are the particulars, and a few more photos.

1980 Honda CBX Vin# SC03-2000943

Engine # SC03E-2000992

There *may be* an old license plate on it, South Dakota M 90758

Thanks in advance for keeping gan eye out for me, and feel free to contact me directly if you have any whiff of it.

Thank you Kev. It does suck. I am still hopeful that I'll get that bike back, it has to look like scrap to a tweaker, but there are scrap yards around here that DGAF, and even though they are not supposed to take vehicles without titles, they do.  So my CBX may be the next Chinese rake you buy, sad to say.

Hell freezes over! The bones of my old trailer just turned up here in Tucson, and that has renewed my interest in recovering the bike. Please keep your eyes peeled, fellas!

Hope you're all well and living large.

Incredible you have recovered the remains of the trailer… by remains, does that mean they chopped the box off or something like that? Or was it burned out.

Generally stolen bikes are rarely seen again if not recovered in first week.

Monimoto makes a good tracker that is not too expensive.

I haven't seen it, but that is what was described to me - it had been hacked at and was now an open-top thing.

Definitely a sucky experience to go through. Imagine the trailer was written off by insurance, if you had theft coverage for it. Otherwise, it like the bikes were a loss. Nobody generally insures a project bike...
Hopefully they have someone to prosecute for the trailer, but odds are it has been passed around through a few hands since stolen.

How the business back east is going well and you are getting some fun in the shop when home in Tucson. The bitsa cbx you put together looks really nice...saw it elsewhere.

Interesting that it finally showed up 5-6 years later. Wonder how it was recovered. No shortage of trailer thieves around SW Michigan. Happens a lot. Local and one of the oldest in the nation Harley shops (Perry's Harley) here got theirs stolen for the second time recently, first time they had bikes in it. One of the sadder stories I remember was a Boy Scout troop trailer and they lost all their gear. You can lock them well but cordless grinders are hell. Can't steal them easily if they don't have wheels on one side.  ;)  Think we can all agree that thieves SUCK !!

Harley shops were getting broken into by organized gangs who would tear the front doors off and then have keys for the bikes they were stealing off the showroom floor. Stealing 6-8 bikes at a time.
Riding them out the door and away...
They busted one of the gangs I read a while back.
Bikes likely ended up in a EMF shielded truck, semi, or connex a couple miles away and trucked away quietly and quickly to be later put in shipping container going abroad or parted out into pieces...
No recovery on the stolen bikes. In and out in 5 minutes typically. Organized crime...

It is amazing the number of trailers and box trailers that get stolen and don't end up recovered. Yeah, not having wheels slows them down a little, they have to come prepared. Best to not help them by having trailer on blocks where it is easy to pop a spare wheel on and get it off the blocks and on its way.
One of the inexpensive ball hitch locks can get hit with a sledge hammer and it cracks and falls apart. Provides very little real protection.
Disc locks are often cast zinc alloys too and cold chisel and sledge make short work of them.
You won't stop a determined thief or a prepared one...
Driving down Grant road here in Tucson one night and guy rode bicycle across the road about 1/4 mile ahead of me and he had second bike beside him he was towing along gripping steering stem. Probably stolen bicycle from some neighborhood or park or bike rack at apartment or business north of Univ of AZ.
