Hi everyone,

So I was approved for the forum today. On January 1st I took delivery of a ‘77 CB750.  Way back in 1977 I owned a ‘75 CB750 which I sold in 1980 when I got married.  And yes, we’re still happily married. 

I owned a few motorcycles after that CB750 but really I stopped riding.  You know how it goes.  In 2007 I started to look for a ‘75 CB750 as a restoration project having just finished building a garage.  No CB750s we’d on offer, but a ‘76 KZ900 (gasp from the Honda people) popped up. I well remembered the drag race I had against my friend’s new KZ900. I was left behind right out of the gate.

So from 2008 until last year I restored a number of the big bore ‘70s Kawasakis including a very nice (once I finished it) 1973 Z1 900.  I would restore them, ride them a while, then sell them off, holding back the Z1.  But last year after doing a 5,000km trip on a KZ1000, I was done with old bikes.  Or so I thought.  I sold off that KZ1000 and my Z1 and bought a shiny new Yamaha Tracer900.  Man is that a sweet ride.

A bit more background.  In 2016 while on a motorcycle trip in New Zealand, I had a near fatal crash on the second day.  I spent 2 months in hospital there.  When I returned home I spent two years recovering and decided not to return to work.  And now that I no longer had old motorcycles to tinker with, I was at loose ends and decided to get another project bike.  A ‘77 CB750 with 23,000 miles on the clock presented itself, so here I am.

The bike is in reasonable shape I guess.  Not requiring a restoration, more like a revival I hope.  Typical story, “it was running when parked”.  The bike is pretty much complete though.  It needs a significant amount of help.  The carb slides were stuck solid from evaporated gas.  I’ve just now disassembled them and am ultrasonic cleaning them. 

Because I’ve not worked in almost seven years, my funds are limited so the CB750 must be done on a shoestring budget.  First I’ll make it run.  I’m going to clean the cabs, reassemble them without any new parts and see if they leak.  If they don’t leak, I’ll put the on and see if the bike will start (have to get a battery) and go from there.

I don’t yet have a manual, but a friend has a Clymer he’ll give me tomorrow.  I’ve no idea of the base settings for the floats or needles etc., so I hope the Clymer will help.  My opinion of Clymer manuals is not very high.

Use original Keihin brass, aftermarket brass in kits is totally junk!
Some just go to plumbing supply to buy orings in Viton or Buna-N that are correct size for cheaper than typical. NurseJulie I think was selling o-ring kits for affordable price. Just get gaskets from Honda.

You're going to find a lot of great advice, recommendations, suggestions and help as well as encouragement from a lot of members here. I've learned so much and received so much help, it's making my rebuild less painful. Good luck with your revival and post some pictures of your bike if you can. Also if there are parts you need, you can post in the 'Wanted' section -  http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/board,182.0.html, sometimes a member here will have something you're looking for and might sell it to you for less than you'd pay at a parts supply house.

Welcome from Texas.  That is a very interesting introduction, and some of us "Honda guys" love Kawasaki's too! [I have a few including a Z1B].

Dont use the brass parts from the carb kits, they are known to cause tuning issues. Clean and confirm the ones you have are genuine Keihin, they should still be good.

Lastly, when needing parts, post a thread in the "Parts Wanted" area, some of us have a stash of spare parts that we sell at fair prices.

Welcome from WI. Sounds like a great project. Lots of resources here. Like Stev-o said if you need parts ask in the "parts wanted" section. The guys here are not only full of good tech info, but offer parts at a good price. Here's a pic of my 77 CB750K I bought new back in the day. One thing you will notice is we love pics here. Post some up of your ride when you can.

So I’m not the most technically adept guy.  At some point I’ll post some pics.  I haven’t taken any as yet except for a couple of the carb linkages. 

I totally agree with the above assessment of carb kit brass.  I’ve cleaned the originals as best I could.  The pilot jets were completely plugged.  I pushed a 038 wire through them and cleaned with gas, then solvent, and reinstalled them.  I live in BC, so I try to source parts in Canada (the currency exchange and shipping costs are quite significant).  I sourced kits from Ontario and they arrived in five days.  I reassembled the carbs yesterday.  I began linking them together but had to stop midway due to family events.  Good thing because I was getting quite frustrated with the choke spring.  I’ll make another attempt this afternoon. 

Should probably start a thread in a different section I suppose.

Did you get the choke spring sorted? They are a puzzle if you're not familiar with them. If not, let me know, I think I have pic of the right way to put them together.
