Best way to splice 3 wires into 1?
« on: February 18, 2023, 12:22:39 PM »
Soon opening up the harness between the tank and headlight.
2 of the 3 ground wires weren’t even attached anymore and 2 black wires were
Badly wrapped and touching the frame.
So what is the best way to connect 3 wires into one?
I have new bullet connectors to create connections but I figured that’s more for an area that is stationary.
So I was soldering wires together but didn’t know the best way to solder 3 to 1.

Solder and heatshrink
Be sure to use a solder gun as apposed to a pencil tip

Yes, I planned to solder with heatshrink but I was curious how to best connect the wires together before soldering. Just attempt to twist 4 50 year old wires together in a big twist? Apply flux and solder with big tip on soldering gun?

Yes. Thanks.
I was just concerned with the integrity of the old copper wires.

You could get a copper crimp sleeve and then solder it.

Use a liquid flux on the wires, connect two wires end to end by fanning out the strands and interweaving then use the third lead to wrap around the two intertwined ones, easier to do than describe

I sometimes feel certain wire connectors are best crimped, especially the ones that have lots of vibration, because the vibration works on the copper(now more brittle from the heat of the solder)wire near the connector and it can break right there.
I don't think those wires you have will have much vibration in that area though.

Ratcheting crimpers can make a gastite joint which is far superior to soldering.

What's a good type of crimp connectors for 16 or 14ga. wire on our bikes ?

I like this type of crimp and solder. Without the bullet connectors.
Commercial Electrical supply houses may have these in stock and will have a better selection but higher price.
The battery cable sizes and up are more common and at that size like already posted the swedging  tool works better to prevent overheating trying to adequately solder cables of that size..

Those look like real brass terminals.

Crimp connectors with nylon insulators are best.  You can recognize them by color.  The less expensive  PVC/Vinyl connectors have opaque, matte insulator material.  The nylon connectors are shinier and translucent.  For an even better connection, use heat shrink connectors.  These have insulators made from heat shrink and glue.

What he says is true. While I don’t know where the above connection is rated from bad to best by the NEMA.
I do know at one time the underwater self-vulcanizing and sealing connection was the absolute best at one time for harsh saltwater environments. You actually lit it and when it burnt out it was done. Everything is being miniaturized.

If using bullet connectors like stock, do no use the cheap chinese type.
Thinner metal, sockets opens up very easy due to the thin metal.
If these 3 green wires are inside of the harness, use a sleeve around them wires aimed as they must.
Crimp if you have a matching tool that can crimp correct.

I made mistake before using a professional hand tool for AMP connectors. I used cheap auto stores bullet plugs with thinner metal. Crimps were not tight, got intermittent issues.

Intermittent ignition issues running on 2 cylinders most noticeable. ;)

The ends of those three wires will be next to impossible to solder with that much oxide on the wire.  Unless you have enough length in the wire to work with so you can gut and strip the wire back far enough to get into fresh, shiny copper, I would actually cut the wire out of the loom and put un a fresh length of new wire and use friction tape (as opposed to electrical tape) to close up the wire loom.

Trying to put a crimp connector on wire jn that condition is asking for problems as well.
