Finally Got Her Down Here
« on: March 14, 2007, 08:14:24 AM »
My '79 650 is finally down here in FL.  She runs like a raped ape!  One problem, the charging system is still not working. :-[

Well, a new regulator/rectifier was fitted, and the mechanic said it was working; but, I never saw it charge.  I need to measure ohms from the rotor, just behind the slip rings, but I don't know what the slip rings are.  Maybe I should just buy a new stator, rotor, and another regulator/rectifier.  The mechanic said that the bike was running off of the battery and not the alternator.  That sounded odd to me, so I tested it the fun way...I rode the bike until it died, which it didn't.  I rode about 130 miles.

Some things I learned:

Once started, the bike runs off of the alternator

The turn signals and brake light run off of the alternator

The headlight runs off of the battery, because I had no headlight after 30 minutes of riding

The second day's ride was slightly different.  I rode about 40 miles and the bike sputtered and died.  It just made a clicking sound when I tried to start it.  Well, my Dad (from out of town) sat with my bike and I rode his huge-ass Softail back home, grabbed the trailer and went to pick up my bike.  When I got there, I started the bike right up.  Well, I called the dealership and they said, "We don't work on anything that old.".  I need to pick up a mechanic's manual and troubleshoot the charging system myself.

I'll be adding new pics to my gallery pretty soon.  Oh, I know tire size is an extremely popular topic here; I have 130/90-17 in the rear and 100/90-19 in the front, both Bridgestone BT-45's.  The bike tracks great and corners just fine.

I'm not an eletrical expert by any means but that says to me your alternator is working it's just not charging the battery.  You're definitely not going to ride 130 miles on battery.  40 miles either.  You might get around the block once or twice on your battery only.

That's what I though also.  I'm not sure if I should try and test the three charging components, or just replace them.  The damn rotor is $244, according to the microfiche, if it's still available.
