Throttle Cable Adjustment
« on: March 14, 2023, 02:42:59 PM »
I'm about ready to go f'ing nuts. I'm serious. This is so infuriating. Can someone please explain to me how to adjust these cables and maybe an explanation as to how to achieve the "snap" that you're supposed to hear. Every time I twist the throttle and let go, it just stays right where I let go at. It doesn't return.

Those look like new cables.

Did you lube them??

And make sure your return mechanism is lubed as well.

And make sure your slides don’t have excess friction.

And in my experience most 70s bikes with original carbs don’t really SNAP back so much as leisurely kinda return.

If the cables are disconnected and you actuate the carbs by hand, do they snap back?

Yes, and if they do, Check that your throttle cables move freely back-and-forth as you twist the throttle, silky smooth. Then check your cable routing, it can definitely jam you up.

+1  Carbs have to return with no cables..👍✅🎯

Then make sure your not loading the cable and throttle tube..

See overcross adjustment…🤔

New cables, yes lubed. Carb is a Mikuni RS34.

If the cables are disconnected and you actuate the carbs by hand, do they snap back?

If I pull back the housing where the cable sits in and let go, then yes it snaps back quick and loud.

The cables move well when I twist the throttle back and forth, but the problem is the throttle just staying wherever it is when I let go.

Mine isn't returning on its own - I have to manually twist it back. I've lubed the cables quite well and there isn't any binding so I'm not sure what's wrong. I just figured it was the adjustment that was off.

If your throttle linkage on your carburetors snaps back quick and loud, and your cables are moving, when you twist, effortlessly, zero resistance, then it has to be routing.

Routing or the white plastic piece on the bars that pulls/pushes the cables under the grip.

So I found the culprit. When installing the mo.grips from Motogadget on 7/8" bars, it calls for 1 of 2 sizes of o-ring that goes on the end to stablize the grip itself. The other o-ring is for 1" bars. I removed the thicker o-ring that is correct for my size bars and put the other skinnier one in. Boom, perfect sliding/twisting acting that snaps the throttle back into position. I'm going to grab quite a few different size o-rings and play around with which one is the best fit for rigidity whilst maintaining free travel of the throttle.

Many thanks to all who gave input/advice, I appreciate it!
