Do I replace my primary chain and rubbers? (CB550)
« on: February 20, 2023, 02:54:41 PM »
I am currently in my split engine. replaced all the oil seals and am doing new bearings. I was thinking about getting rubbers and a primary chain but $200 is a lot for me rn. I found out NOS parts has them but used and I thought it might be a good idea to get those instead of leaving the stock stuff in there. but is it not worth it. and if getting the used ones isn't worth it do I just cave and get the new ones or am I fine to slap it all back together.
It has Unknown Mileage and is a 75 CB550k1

Sorry I added it to the og post. its a 75 cb550 k1. Unknown mileage but a guess would be 25k? I probably shouldn't guess as I have no idea, but it hasn't been ridden much in the last 8-10 years. I'm going to check chain tension tonight, but I thought maybe i should just do everything I can while I am in here. I looked at the primary drive rubbers and they look fine and are stiff but I assume the stock ones are also stiff. so idk

The chain for a Kawasaki part number 92057-1011 is way cheaper and the same as the 500/550 Honda one.

If you do fit new chain new rubbers are a must or the chain will take a hammereing, i do know they have gone up in price recently

Yeah. I’ll either do both or neither probably. I think I’ll try to do both.

Do you plan on keeping the bike or flipping it?
I like to restore it the right way and go all 'oem new parts' but then later I sell the bike and I've fully restored $ it..  ::)
I vote you get brand new parts  ;)

I wish they made the sohc4's with primary drive 'gears' rather than chains..  ::)

Way more expensive to produce and more unforgiving of snatch loads

With the Kawasaki chain and Honda rubbers you shouldn't be over $130. You can get some idea of the chain wear by setting up like a tank track and seeing how much of the top run touches the lower. New chains don't touch. Even at maybe 25k miles abused chains can rub parts of crankcases and new parts made my bikes run a whole lot smoother.

Thanks yall I'm ordering it today. All in from davids it will be around $120 plus shipping (that includes some other odds and ends).
What about bearings for the main shafts and gear shafts? are those a common failure point. they seem to spin very smooth and have no play.
