Gas tank emblem differences CB550
« on: March 04, 2020, 03:36:49 PM »
I have a 77 CB550, and want to replace the fuel tank emblems. The part no. in 77 is  87122-390-780, which is unavailable. I can find, however, oem part no. 87121-300-030, which is the gold emblem, but it says it fits pre-1976 K models only. The distance between the mounting pegs looks the same as my current set (silver). Is it just the color, or will these really not fit on a '77 tank?

Is your 77 an F or K?

They won’t fit. They’re about 10mm different. Message Can550 he has a set for sale for 77-78.

original Honda badges for these bikes are no longer available. There are reproductions . Some are plastic stick-ons. Some are actually metal that screw on.....Maybe someone makes a metal, push on like the original?...ebay...
Also, the part # for your '77 isn't exactly like the '75, '76 models. The last 3 #'s are -780 for yours and -000 for earlier......middle #'s are 390, which is for these "F" models....I did not see a superseded #...
but there might be a small difference that won't let them interchange.....
so double check...

What a pain in the ass these things are.
the 75-76 super sport tanks emblems have mounting posts that are set further apart.
the 77-78 super sport and K model (which are the same) cb550s have emblems that have mounting posts that are a little closer together.

the 77-78 K and F models have a mounting post more directly in between the "H" and "O" and the 75-76 F model tanks have a post more directly behind the "H" further away from the "O".

Thanks for all your help guys. I just can't find a decent replacement anywhere. Well, that's not true. I contacted Badge Replicas Australia but they wanted upwards of $400 because they would have to make a new mould. No thanks!

newday777, I'm definitely not a scammer. Just a new owner looking to find some tank badges!

If worse comes to worse and you can't find the correct ones, maybe clipping off the pins and using double-sided tape to adhere the emblems to the tank.

Yep, I might get a cheap ebay set for now and also order a decent set which I can cut the pins off and attach to the tank

You wont resolder the pins, the metal wont take it but quality double sided tape would do it
