Topic: Where can I find info,parts,etc. for an old Montgomery Ward air compressor ?

I bought this 1hp Monty Wards USA-made air compressor mod.#XER-6418(from back in the early 80's)and it pumps very well and seems to be in great condition.The pump is a vertical twin and I want to keep it and maintain it to run for a long time. The 11gal. tank and physical size/weight and power requirements plus CFM output of the pump of this compressor is a plus for me and it can accomplish quite a few tasks,possibly even run a very small sand blast cabinet.
I purchased it locally off CL and it was sold by a woman who told me it was her previous boyfriends compressor whom he inherited from his Grandfather.
I can tell it had plenty of care and oil changes with very little use. The pump was made by Campbell Hausfeld company.
The one thing I want to do is remove the cylinder head and clean-out the inside of the head/valves and the two cylinders as it came to me w/o an air filter felt which fits in the top of the cylinder head.
Does anyone know of a source for parts or an old book or info? top-end gaskets are my first need.

The local people that I've been to and asked here have not been at all helpful;I would like to get a model# for this Campbell Hausfeld pump which would help alot,but there's no tag on the pump.
I only see the Montgomery Ward model# and they are not supporting things like this anymore.
I like to restore vintage items,not throw them away.

There must be an air compressor place(or collector)somewhere in our country who likes these little work-horse machines and could help me.

Wonder how many years ago that the simple little foam pieces used for the air filter crumbled away and turned to dust. Weren't really what a person would call high tech that's for sure. I've had a couple of ones like yours made by Sears but one of them now has a hissing little leak in the tank which is probably a pinhole and may be dangerous so its parked.

Yeah  ,I think this one 'had' a type of fiber/felt air filter and a holder;it probably got sucked into the pump along with the extra fine,abrasive powder that's in the air here in this dry atmosphere(although it's Plenty H20 Now)in Ca.
I will remove the top-end and clean every last bit of foreign matter off the moving parts,then install a fresh filter and maintain this one the way that boy's Grandfather had done since he bought it new in 81'?
I need to figure out the model# of this Campbell Hausfeld compressor pump so I can get the correct parts/book.
The valve/head isn't the older style but an improved style(back then)which was more efficient for it.

The first thing I did when I bought it and brought it to storage was loosen the petcock at the bottom of the tank while it had 80psi in it;not a hint of water or vapor came out of that,which show's it's been cared-for.

I pulled off the cylinder head but couldn't remove the cylinder block as the gasket is really sealed tight;(it's a 2 3/4" bore parallel twin)I'll be removing the reed/flapper valves to clean them all up and will be using some blue Loctite to hold down each hex head screw for the reed valves. I cleaned-out the dust,etc. and the tops of both pistons(a few years of unfiltered air..)the best I could;both bores look good.   USA all the way !

I would assume it was made for MW by some company and that company probably made compressors for Sears and others.  Did you try a search by the picture?

I think mine by sears is the same.  I will look for serial number later today.

I can use a picture of the pump itself:it is definitely manufactured by Campbell Hausfeld.
Which site would I try to ask for CH model i.d. ??

I'm on hold with the CH company in Long Grove,IL. But finally spoke to a live human !  I just sent an email with a couple pictures.. hoping they'll get back to me.

I'm also hoping someone here on the forum may know of a compressor repair shop?(that has a type of old parts book,etc. with a picture/description of this cylinder head)that might have info on this style Air Pump and help me get a physical identification on which model# CH pump it is,then I can know what model to order parts for online.
There's no tag on the pump itself and Campbell Hausfeld was the manufacturer of the actual 'air pump' for many different makes of small air compressors back then for many years.
They made many good USA quality Homeowner/Light Duty and Semi-Commercial Duty air compressors,back in the day.. I would rather repair this older USA one compared to getting a new CH China-made pump.

The valuable employee over there at CH in Long Grove,IL. has came through(800-543-6400)and sent me an email about this compressor.
Sonya Stamm sent me a copy of the owners manual and it's badged as Montgomery Ward at the top;they use actual Campbell Hausfeld part numbers showing on the pages and as you can imagine,not all parts are still available.
The Campbell Hausfeld model number for my pump(from the 80's)is #VT232700JM:Campbell Hausfeld was the parent company of all these small Made in USA compressors back then and they still have some parts. She sent me to mastertoolrepair.com/757-547-8665 in Chesapeake,Va. and the Montgomery Ward PDF Owner's Manual part numbers are what I'm using. I think that's a great start to contact and information. Sonya has been very helpful. 

I had a question about proper grade compressor oil as certain newer compressors(even the China-made replacement CH pump for this one,mod.#VT4923)use Non-detergent compressor oil.. The Monty Ward PDF owners manual(1981 copyright date)Sonya sent to me says to use standard 10/40wt. detergent engine/motor oil.
I called her and she said to do what that owners manual recommends,so I'll look to put some Quaker State or other 10/40 detergent motor oil in it.

A Devilbiss is a Commercial Duty compressor;they used them for decades in automotive service stations.
That machine a 2-Stage pump that pumps over 150Lbs. ?
They have a brass tag stamped with the Model# on them:no sweat with correct identification.

No, it is just a single stage with a 30 gallon tank.  The same basic compressor was sold under the Porter Cable and Campbell Hausfield names, and probably others.
