bye-bye avon
« on: March 05, 2023, 07:08:04 AM »
racing avons were my 1st choice when i was still deep into it....

also the street tires were a fine choice for classics,

always bad to hear when a company with such long history shuts down

They have not said whether they will continue the motorcycle tire line, and just shift it to another factory.  For now, it appears that they will continue making tires in the UK until late this year.

Yes it's a shame, but their prices had become unreasonable, and supply was worse.

Now if Bridgestone would offer more sizes that were better in the rain!

About 4 years ago Cooper Tire moved the Avon car tire manufacturing from England to Serbia.  Maybe they will do the same with the motorcycle tires.  Having said that, Cooper jointly owns a few factories in China, so moving them there is definitely a possibility.

I'd think that the road tires will continue and are less of an issue if made elsewhere. My fresh Metzeler Roadtec01 in 18" for my Guzzi were made in indonesia, not germany.... and thye are great,

but i dont believe the wonderful hand made race compound Avon tires will continue outside uk.... hard to see that happening.

no i think they are finished , despite the high prices they only listed profits of 6 grand for 2020 and i suspect things have got worse from there .  they will be missed but its not the end of the world there are a couple of alternatives and as everyone will be in the same boat everyone will be equal .   not as bad as the 70s when dunlop supplied A and B grade tyres to there favourite riders and the rest had to make do with the standard stuff !

Still hate to see them go. As an example I paid $800+CDN last set of AM22/23 race tires I bought. Might have been 2019 though Simon, profits that year might have been better because of it!

This is really bad news for the sidecar boys, almost all of who use Avon racing car tyres as far as I am aware. Last ones my mate got were £1,000 for a set of three though!

Pirelli do manufacture an alternative but have refused to supply anyone who (might) do the Isle of Man TT.

Off topic, but the TT organisers have had to change the regulations for the Superstock class, as Dunlop won't supply a treaded tyre, so they're having to allow slicks.

with superstock times being very similar to superbike times i suppose they think the road tyres might not be up to it , not a great advert for their road tyres though .
