Motorcycle Insurance
« on: March 08, 2023, 02:47:51 PM »
Last month, I received what I thought was my annual renewal for my bike's insurance from Dairyland.
I was quite surprised when the letter stated that my "insurance program is no longer supported and as a result, my policy will not be renewed". WTF?!  I've been with them for several years [just my bikes] and never a claim. I was in a hurry and didnt read the entire letter but was disappointed as they gave me very good rates.  The next day I started shopping around and was not happy with the quotes I was seeing. Went back to the "NONRENEWAL NOTICE" [yes, it was in upper case text!] and read the remaining part of the letter and it stated that there was an enclosed offer for replacement coverage, with a new Powersports program they have. Get this, the rates went down!  I was shocked and immediately wrote a check and mailed it so I would have uninterrupted service.

When was the last time insurance rates went down for you?  My wife handles all of our other insurance needs [cars, home, boat] and always blames me when the rates go up and lectures me not to get any tickets! [yeah, yeah, honey!]
The rate reduction was not a significant amount but cheaper is cheaper!

If you are shopping for insurance, I highly recommend Dairyland.
They also offer seasonal coverage for you guys up the great white North.

I had Dairyland insurance on my newer motorcycles for many years.  I was pretty happy with the rates and service.  At some point they quit doing business in my state due to a change in the laws, so I had to go elsewhere.

I've always had classic and vintage bikes insured with J.C. Taylor.  Their rates are excellent, and they insure for an agreed value.

Not familiar with J.C. Taylor but a quick search shows that they also insure Classic Cars.
I use American Modern for my Ol' Chevy [affordable rates and high agreed value]

Tonight, I insured 4 bikes online, a 78 GL1000, 81 GS1100, 72 cb750 and 70 cb750, for my wife and I with Progressive for $135 a year. That almost seems too cheap, each bike was that much at Farmers insurance.

I've been using Progressive for a long time, mostly just because they also do my cars and motorhome, so I get a discount on all of them.
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

That’s similar but perhaps better than what we have at our independent. I insured a 2014 Cb1100 and a 1976 F1 for $89.00 no lay up in winter…
my son ended up paying because the 2014 was going to cost him more than that every month being single and young..

I've been with Progressive for years with the old Volvo and little Honda and it's very reasonable.
I just registered/insured another bike and Progressive added it to my little Honda policy for only an additional $25 per year.  :o :)   I thought that was a great deal.

I'm dealing with this company which is called 'Drive Insurance' which I think is the same as Progressive?

I had Erie when I lived in W. Pa.,it seemed quite fair.

I have liability only.

So you guys with Taylor, Progressive, Erie, etc...are you getting the stated value coverage? I am with Hagerty with stated value. Maybe should compare with these other companies as I am up for renewal in May.

I do all three of my bikes with Progressive. So far, every couple of years my premium drops a few bucks.

I had insurance with Progressive for years, just minimum coverage for road legality.  Rates started out good but crept up every year.  Finally got fed up with it.  Now have Hagerty with full coverage at stated value...paying hundreds less...

I really dpn't know...probably.  Historically, Michigan practiced what was known as "no fault" insurance laws, which prevented insurance companies and their customers ftom engaging in certain types of litigation.  As a result, rates were generated by national insurance companies that were meant to punish the citizens of Michigan.  Around 5 years ago, these laws were all basically repealed, after relentless insurance company lobbying and campaigning.  Foolish citizens were wooed by the promise of lower rates.  Now, just a few years later, rates are higher than they ever were before with less catastrophic injury coverage available.
If it works good, it looks good...

That is very reasonable. I have Progressive too and my 750F alone costs more than that.

Apparently, my lack of claims, years of experience and age got a few discounts. More bikes cost less per bike because I can only ride one at a time. I'm hoping I got it right and printed the coverage for each bike. I kept expecting to learn it was 6 or 3 months. Seems legit.

There are other variables that determine rates.  Do you have full coverage or just basic liability?  Do you have "agreed value" or will let them value your loss in the event of a theft or total loss?  What is your deductible?  Location is also a big one, I have also heard MI has the highest rates.

My wife works in the insurance business, I have learned a lot from her including the cheapest insurance may not be in your best interest, especially when it's time to file a claim.

Agreed value and $500 deductible. West Central Illinois is my location. I went reasonable on values and didn't cover my sandcast with them. These 4 bikes I consider replaceable within my collection, sometimes insurance is as big a pain as a payment.

My wife has shown me horrible reviews on Progressive Insurance. I'm aware sometimes these are fake ones from competitors but also may be real.

I have 5 bikes and two MGB's with Haggerty on agreed value for $400 a year. Two of the bikes(77' KZ 1000 LTD and the 84' VF 700S) are legacy bikes that pay off the value and I get the bike back because they have been in the family since almost new. 8)
