Topic: CB750 finned starter cover

So Im starting this build as a challenge
got myself a cover to start off and see what im working with
overall it doesnt look like it would be no biggie but first thing is first
I only got a cover and no engine
but that shouldnt stop me should it

getting started when I took the cover out of the bag it looked huuuuge!
I went and got the 500/550 cover to see just how much of a difference in size is.
not too much bigger.
this cover is sleek and thin just like the 500/550 cover so I think that it should be able to make one with fins.

looking at some pics I did notice something similar but very different with the 750 cover that it is overlapped by the cam chain tensioner.
so some questions for this is how much of the tensioner covers over the starter cover?

moving on I checked around the shelves to see what would make a good fin for the cover
I found these 3

the first one is the original fin design from the stator and points covers

this would seem to be the main choice to make since it would look correct with the other two covers.

would it be better oriented front to back or side to side like the fins on the jugs and head?

Second choice showint the R.C.I fins that I used for the 750 modified clutch cover
I still do not know what the original cover was for.

this one the fins are smaller and dont jump out as much as the original fins look

and the wild card the long ass chopper looking fins.
I got this for the 400f clutch adjust cover. they just worked.
these fins came from the bottom of the 500/550 oil pan.

what I like about this fin look is it is just different
there wont be alot of fins and the slope will help the cover slip out of the mold easier than the other two

let me know what you guys think about the different types.
also if anyone can give me some measurements of the cam chain tensioner that would help me out

I'm not at my shop so I can't get the measurements but here a couple of pictures showing the limited clearance to the cam adjuster.

it looks like there should be some room for some thickness at the front
i see the cam tensioner rises up at the end that would make a cool couple of fins following it.

I just got back to the shop and on the K8 I have on the lift there isn't room under the tensioner body to add any height, as you have to slide the cover in place and when down in place, there's only 1/16" to the Tensioner body and the cover, only 3/16" to the adjuster bolt.
I would suggest leaving the cover height as stock in the tensioner area 1 3/8" from front the lip and 1 3/8" from theright side for installation ease.

Okay I see now. I think adding anything around it would make it difficult to screw in the bolt. I guess that is why there is that empty space on the 550 cover.
On the inside where the starter motor is, does it sit flush onto the cover or is there any space between the motor and cover.
If there is I can fill from the inside bottom of that area so there is some meat to that area. Some of my earlier pieces didn't like thin areas.

Looking at it more, I'm thinking it might be better to leave a bigger area than I 1st drew. Probably hold them to the rear angle area and beyond the bolt hole so that it looks like it was planned???
Yes the cover sets on the starter bosses for the bolts and the motor goes away down from the bosses.

I've got an old finned starter cover in storage somewhere, it's got peeling chrome and I think it has angled fins like this one but I can't remember for sure.

It directs the air flow towards the intake of the air cleaner box in the center......

checked around fb marketplace today and found a guy around me that has a 750 engine for sale.
Im going to go check it out this thursday coming up and see if I can work a deal out for it.

Gotcha...... it was an off the cuff remark. I don't really know why....

working on the bar stock.
I had a hell of a time with the fins being that they were not flat!
grinded away most of what rounded it out before making molds to lengthen.
still have some work with the R.C. and oil pan but the original had enough.
after making one more I can start thinning the bottom to as much as I can to adhear to the starter cover
also going to cut the angles on each to make a nice fit to the 3 pieces, fill any open areas.
right now they are rough until the end casting is made and then some sanding or polishing who knows
