Assume you are referring to replacing all side cover/valve cover JIS screws?

I can't comment on the SS properties as it relates to interaction with aluminum with anti-seize, but there is probably a special type that is needed, probably wouldn't hurt as long as you got the proper type.

I don't think you would want any kind of Loctite on any of these.

If you use loctite on stainless in alloy you will probably need dynamite to ever get them out again

I just use anti seize and be careful not to put too much “grunt” on them. Use a 1/4 drive, small ratchet and go gently. Also ensure each screw engages in the case by 1.5 X the diameter of the thread. Too little and you will strip the case threads.

Honda used Philips head screws so it was impossible to over torque....

The instructions I got with a nice 750 kit said to use anti-seize. Wish I could remember the suggested formula. Got a container hiding in the shop.

I use a torque wrench for all covers. Too many thread repairs.
https://www.unitconverters.net/energy/nm-to-ft-lb.htm

I usually tightened with 10Nm (7.37 ft lb). I have reduced that to max 7.5Nm (5.53 ft lb) with new gasket. Or 5Nm with old.

Lately valve cover to 5Nm (3.68 ft lb) and retighten the day after if gasket is new. This is what I can tighten with a screwdriver.

Valve cover threads have got many inserts in a few heads.

Tighten harder to avoid leak is not working.
I changed to allen heads for many years ago and too easy to tighten ;) ;D

Aluminium paste is a good anti seize and handle very high temparatures . I use it on sparkplug threads.

+1 on torque wrench, it's way to easy to over torque
+1 on what PeWe said about keeping torque low, again, way to easy to pull the threads
+1 on anti-seize, a must with stainless in almost any usage, especially in these tiny 6mm threads
I battle corrosion here in paradise, stainless is a real help.

Technically, no!  Allen is a brand name.

"Hex keys are also known as Allen wrenches. In the early 1900s, the Connecticut-based Allen Manufacturing Company launched its own branded hex key, naming it the “Allen wrench.”

We always use anti-seize on all bolts when assembling the bikes. I have a WW II vintage Plumb 1/4" drive 6" long extension I use to tighten all 6mm fasteners. It works like a torque stick, you can only tighten so tight before it starts to twist the extension. I've never stripped the threads in aluminum since I started using it.

Thanks

I would use a non-metallic anti-seize compound or a non-metallic grease.  The majority of anti-seize compounds contain metals that are more noble than aluminum.  If moisture makes its way into the area from bike washing riding in the rain, etc, bare aluminum and stainless, or aluminum and stainless with a metallic grease or anti-seize may cause the aluminum to corrode.

Marine grease is non-metallic, and is often available in smaller tubes.

Great info. Thanks you all so much.
Yea I’ve always called them Barrel heads. I guess the common name is Socket Cap Head.

I’m replacing EVERY JIS screw with these SS Bolts.

Again thanks for all the info, appreciate it.
