Triple question, handling gurus?
« on: March 22, 2023, 04:38:17 PM »
 I found two triple trees that have the pinch bolts on the lower triple tree coming from the rear, also the top tree appears thinner between the bearing retaining nut and the top tree retaining nut.
 One of the trees like this was cut and welded back together in the middle of the stem, not sure why.

 Any ideas what year or Honda they are from?

I have seen the welded stem before also and could not figure out what the deal was

 I did find a pair of 550 forks and a 550 disc brake under the bed so it's possible they are 550. A clue I'll follow up on.
 Edit;
 This just in, Partzilla parts page shows 550 trees with the bolts coming from the rear.
 They would look better on a naked front end like my dragbike.  The problem doing that is the thin top bridge I have has both clamps broken and apparently came off of my 836 Hot Rod bike. I need to check the offset also. The welded one is going to the junk bin, I'll check the offset on the other one.
 Sorry I posted, then answered my own question.  L0L!

The 550 has 45mm offset, the 750F has 50mm and the 750K has 60mm. That might be why it was on the hot rod bike, maybe to make up for trail change due to lowering the bike at the rear?

 Answers, I found another 550 top and bottom. The 550 has a shorter steering stem, the weld was done so the 550 triples would fit on a cb750 neck.
  That may also be the reason it had ball bearings while his other bike had rollers. The welded stem is still a tad shorter than a 750 stem and it possibly didn't fit with the sometimes, taller tapered bearings.

 Apparently, the PO was also interested in going around corners. That would be why he reduced the offset.

  The fun part is, I test rode it 80 mph like that. New wheel bearings, tires and brakes though. L0L!

 The turbo drag bike appears to have 111mm of trail with 32* of rake and the 50mm offset F triple trees. It sits really low which it can with the exhaust going out the left side and the front wheel out there a little.
 When the tapered bearings get here tomorrow. I'll assemble and check the Hot Rod bike for rake and trail.
  I want the original K1 triples and gauges back on it. Crazy on a total custom bike, but I like the K1 look, it may be a big change from the 45mm offset.
