Dyna coils and plug wires

Ok all you motorcycle electrics gurus, I’ve got a question. My k5 came with a Dyna s ignition system, complete Dyna 3 ohm coils and plug wires and caps which I believe came in the kit. I would much rather run the stock set up with hondaman’s ignition but I don’t have the plate, so for now I’m going to run the Dyna. But, I digress. My question is about the wires and caps. Would I be better off running the stock plug wires and ngk caps? The bike ran when I got it, just not very well. I’m doing the carbs and the tank will have to be cleaned. It ran good enough to get me to the dmv but just barely. I’m certain it’s the carbs as everything is nasty. Thoughts? Thanks in advance!!! Sorry about the length.

If you revert back to the stock points (even with Hondaman's ignition) you will also need the points cam that rides on the advancer shaft since the Dyna rotor/trigger replaces the stock points cam.

Dyna did a very good marketing and sales job to convince buyers that Honda was incompetent to design and implement an ignition system.

Honda design: 
Spark plugs - non resistor type.
Plug caps -  5k ohm for good longevity reasons (or 10k ohm if demanded by gov import requirements based on the desire to reduce radio frequency interference from the unshielded spark leads).
Plug wires - stock coils had stranded aluminum wire that the stock plug caps screw into tightly.  Most sales and marketing will entice you with either resistance wire from automotive applications that they stock on hand, (sometimes with flashy colors).  Or, with copper core wire with the enticement of “ lower resistance” to impress those that don’t realize that the resistance difference of about 0.0001 ohms is insignificant when 5000 ohms ( x2) is placed in the circuit path added to the 15,000 to 16,000 ohms inherent in the coil secondary windings.

3 ohm primary coil merchants sell you the promise of “hotter” spark, as if you needed that with a stock compression ratio engine, that was able to operate 50,000 miles plus with the more than adequate 5 ohm primary coils. The Dyna system with 3 ohm coils draw nearly twice the load on the charging system and electrical connections in trade for not adjusting/checking points at 3000 mile intervals.

Beware marketing and salesmen willing to take your money preying on your ignorance of real needs.

If only the stock ignition leads didn’t harden and crack with the age these bikes attain (sigh).

I have bought and used these spark advancers, with one caveat:

The springs that come on these advancers are WAY wrong, not reaching full advance until somewhere above 5000 RPM(!). So, if you get one of these, swap your present advancer's springs onto it, they will work and usually solve the problem handily. The rest of this advancer is very, very close to the TEC style advancers found in the 750K3 thru K8 bikes.

Remembering from a while ago, the Dyna plug wires came in two long sections with coil connectors on each end so you cut somewhere between those to give you the lengths you need (with a bit extra wasted). I don't remember getting plug caps but it was a long time back and the kit could have changed. I did use 5K NGK plug caps. Looks good and still works. OEM coils have integrated cables so you can't really use stock. Some Honda coils (GL?) do have connectors and wires that come off but auto store metal core wire is fine. You should put a sleeve over the cable though, just like OEM. The cables can come pretty close to the engine and arc-through is common... the sleeve adds insulation and distance, helps a lot.

...especially in the rain, when the cables are old. My left foot STILL has less feeling than normal from that rainy night after the wires had developed cracks, and i was 90 miles from home...

Mark, that’s the problem. I don’t have any of the stock ignition parts. No points plate, no advancer unit, and no advancer cam. So, no springs either. Recommendations? Thanks!!
