Dunstall fairing/ fiberglass bodywork

I have always wanted one of these fairings. Checked shows and swaps. I am far too cheap to purchase a new set. Picked up a set of well made molds from a boatbuilder. Going to make some up. Any interest/ motivation or advise would be fanfreaking tastic!! Thanks guys!
These are the molds. I also got some seat pan molds for a triumph T140?

This is the goal. (On a cb750F though of course)

Hey Franken!   I've always wanted one too, thats why I bought this K3 project bike and restored it. Appears to be a diff model though.

SteveO!! Yeah buddy. Looks like same model, just the bottoms aren’t on there. I have the molds for them on table in the pic.

That's a great project! I could drop by with my Royal Enfield Interceptor if you'd like to check fit. I'll bet you'd sell a few for those bikes.

On a separate note, I was wondering if you'd be interested in making molds for CB160 side covers? I've got a set handy.

The Dunstall fairing is probably one of the most beautiful fairings made for CB750 ;)

The glass is easy to get?

I have a short fairing with rectangular headlight and rectangular inlet for oil cooler.
Said to use Dunstall glass.

From the old catalog from my local go fast parts and work shop.

Alan....Next time check out Kenda K761’s. My son put them on 19”F and 18”R Lesters on our K3. Great in gravel and work really well on pavement too!

Do they make noise?
They look somewhat like the stock tires that were on my 2009 Ruckus (sold it) and they had a nice hum.

Using some mix of stuff on hand. Ideally I think a couple nice big pieces of unstarched woven would be perfect.

Thinned out the epoxy with denatured alcohol for wetting

Dont take this the wrong way but your layups don’t not look all that great, lots of air bubbles and unsaturated glass.

Get yourself a bubble buster (layup roller) and some (fresh) poly resin. Poly resin will flow though and saturate the cloth much easier than epoxy which likes to be “pushed/pulled) through.

Without a vacuum bag you probably aren’t gonna hand layup any big/complex curves with woven glass.

In your case, chopmatt is your friend.

If you want it to look super clean go of it, you can run your mold with gelcoat let it gel, then lay down your chopmatt with poly and roll it real good. You will have a clean layer of solid gelcoat without hairs in it that requires little to no sanding.

Ha. Yeah. Be honest. I am learning. Watched some YouTube videos and decided to just have a go at it. This was my first time doing anything this big. Just using the materials that I have on hand. I made a roller out of delrin and seemed to work good. Will demold on Monday.

I really just want to make a couple of these fairings.

You can build a decent vacuum pump using a metal coffee can , some brass tubing, soldered into the can with an inexpensive fish tank air pump, and a board the can and pump are glued to the upsidedown can. Then poly sheet and caulk to make the bagging materials from..

You can actually get good results with what sounds like a Jerry rigged setup.

Epoxy resin needs thinned to work well and produces stronger layups than poly resin. Can be more brittle also. But it is best done with laminating resin, not epoxy glued as they don't have the working time needed and penetration of the cloth is harder if the resin isn't made for lamination work.

RC airplanes fuselages and wings are often built with the inexpensive air pump coffee can vacuum pumps.

There are many ways to build a vac pump.

Fish tank pumps work, hospital pumps work…

For small parts I’ve even used a food sealer and large storage bags with a home vacuume

Nonetheless you can get a perfectly good hand layup with your molds. Just use the proper material and take your time.

If you don’t have a lot of skill AND your trying to skimp/use what you go/push things past their optimal than your really on a road to leas than stellar results.
