Topic: CB550K1 Cluch basket axial free play

When inspecting clutch of my CB550K1 I found that basket has axial plau about 0.7mm. There is nothing obviously worn, can somebody confirm is is normal? It looks to me quite a lot..

Honda service manual describe ho to adjust play of clutch center (washer under snap ring) but says nothing about basket axial play, nor any service limit...

I can’t remember exactly how much play should or should not be there, but is your shim washer in there?

All the 550s I have recently done were like that.
It bugs me when the other SOHC4 bikes aren't that way, but considering that the 550 clutch is pressed toward the engine by the lifter all the time (and harder when the clutch lever is pulled), it won't go anywhere.

there should be a shim or two behind the circlip,might be hard to spot and stuck in the hub,# 15 in the picture.

This is what I explained, shims you mention are intended to tune free play of inner basket, but I mentioned free play between collar 2 and outer basket 1. Only way to reduce that play would be to put washer under collar shoulder and this does not exist on fiche

IIRC 0,1mm, 0,3mm, 0,5mm or none at all. Anyway that was as far as the CB500. The CB500 I own has none. 
I remember some 35 years ago, when I had planned to replace clutch diskes and springs, I've ordered the shims. I just had a look in my parts box and found the 0,1 and 0,5 one. I can't remember if back then I have also ordered the 0,3 mm one. Why the 0.1mm's outside is wider, I have no idea. Maybe the shop gave me the wrong one.
Than this. I've never known if these shims are meant to address wear or if one of them was selected at the assembly line, to address a then manifest play for each individual bike, if needed.

Thanks Delta, but still, these shims are to fix play of inner basket (and I'm well aware about it), not as in my case, outer one.

That's why I asked others, if such play of outer basket is normal on CB550 engines. I have no other to compare nor experience with from the past

Delta, those shims were selectively fitted on assembly to account for machining tolerances.

Thanks, Bryanj. I thought so too. At around 75.000 km on the odometer, I've replaced springs and disks. BTW, both disks and springs were exactly at the minimum as described in the Shop Manual CB500-550. I had bought the shims at forehand, but was surprised I didn't need either one of them after all.

I concluded this play as normal and will let it be as is
