Topic: Unknown Bolt?

This bolt may look like any other M6x12 bolt, and it does!

However it dropped onto my table-top  when I removed the left hand tranny cover - the one over the gear change mechanism, during my efforts to stop an oil leak.

I have no idea where it came from, which is somewhat worrying. It is not the bolt that holds the gearshift stopper, and it is not the bolt holding the neutral switch.

Any ideas?

Looks like a starter cover bolt. It may have been dropped by a P.O. with the front sprocket cover removed and has been hitchin a ride behind the trans cover ever since.

Gotta love reverse engineering P.O.'s blunders!

Nope, can't blame him; the last PO was involved in 1978!!  So if that's the case, "mea culpa!" – about 30-odd thousand km ago when I did a complete restoration.

But you're right, that's what it looks like. What I thought was oil burned on the head is actually absence of chrome. When I considered that, I was thinking the cover bolts were the longer ones holding the starter itself in place.

Thanks, I can now put everything back together, after checking for other foreign bodies, without a nagging doubt.

 That tranny cover has a pocket in the top that is open under the sprocket cover, it can collect dirt, grease mouse items and stray things like that. When you remove the cover, the assorted dirt and whatever, falls inside the motor leaving us looking at the junk thinking how in the world did that get in there?
 It took me a barn find or two to figure it out.
