Kia takes to the air

Never know what can go wrong out on the road. I hope the driver of the Kia did survive and wasn't hurt to bad. If that had been a bike we all know what the out come would of been :(

Wow!

I had something similar happen to me with a boulder.  I was driving on a mountain road at night, in heavy rain, in a BMW 533i.  As I came around a corner a boulder about 18" in diameter rolled down the hill onto the road.  I tried to avoid it, but could not.  The left front wheel hit it hard, and rolled over it, the car flipped on two wheels momentarily, but came back down.  It bent the rim, suspension arms, and front sub-frame.  Surprisingly, it did not blow the tire.

That or the added load of the wide wheels with added offset fatigued things causing failure. Or someone didn’t torque them properly, or check them after 100 miles…

+1  Wheels look to have too wide offset.

Aftermarket thicker rims ending up in too short bolts?

I have heard about hard tightened bolts due to an idiot working in a car repair/service shop.
Another shop could remove with help of strong tools for huge trucks.

Happened my x while I was on a business trip way from home.
She had to get the winter wheels on 6 months after a bad service.

a guy i used to work with got a 300C when they first came out and of course had to put 21s on, due to the extra width and lack of bump absorption it was shedding at least one wheel stud a week

and where i work now ( toyota dealership in spares ) we regularly get mechanics calling up for sets of studs and nuts after some dipsh1t with a 4WD had fitted the biggest stupidest wheels and tyres and loses a wheel out in the bush somewhere. i'm grateful for idiots like that though, keeps me in a job, same with bad drivers in general, when autonomous cars finally get up and going we'll be out of a job, about 90% of our trade is crash damage
i blame Terry

When I was living in SoCal in the 80's I was driving down a split four lane boulevard and noticed that one of the rear tires on the El Camino in front of me appeared to be getting wider.  I darted past it, looked in my rearview mirror and I could see the tire and axle assembly shoot out into the lane I just past it in. It was flipping around all over the place like a madman with a baseball bat.  I couldn't really tell if it hit any of the cars that were behind me, but everything came to a hault and I just kept driving.

If you look carefully towards the end of the video,  you will see that the brake disc was still attached to the wheel. This looks like a bearing, and/or axle failure.  It was possibly caused by overloading the components with the excessive wheel offset.

The single unit bearing system on the front of modern 4x4 trucks was a bad idea anyway. I'm still running the original dual tapered roller bearings in my 93' F250 diesel 4x4.

Years ago, I had a aftermarket wheel fail on my F150 four wheel drive truck.

I was making a high speed turn and the center part of the wheel "ripped" away from the studs [they were 15" steel wagon wheels with large 33" tires].
No damage to truck or anything else and the wheel was replaced under warranty.

Recently I saw a newer Ford Super Duty with a broken aftermarket front wheel, same thing with the center still bolted to the axle. My buddy and I couldn't believe how thin the spoke sections were.

Should I mention the 1970s AMEN chopper frames for the CB750?

That highlights the fact that some accidents just can't be avoided no matter how careful and alert you are. Even a suburban would have flipped over in that situation.

Not sure about now but Volvo used to build their cars and engineered them to keep a Moose from being able to come through the front windscreen to kill you. In Sweden they had accident investigation teams that responded to and serious accident involving a Volvo to analyze things to determine what happened and if there were injuries they worked to identify the cause or failure points and when possible they re-engineered the component or components that allowed the injury. Totally different philosophy from most car companies. Saab did similar things.

Sweden is a very unique place, totally different culture and high taxation. Many Americans cannot adapt to living there. They have sensors on parking and have displays to identify where open parking is on a street as you enter the street you can get a quick visual where or know if there are open parking spots available ahead. Parking garages are similarly equipped. Their washing machines instead of cold warm or hot settings for temperature you set the degrees C you wish to wash the load in…
It is just some of the simple differences.
Not sure if the Asian or Chinese company that now owns Volvo has continued with the practices that the old Volvo held to.

Saw recent news article identifying Tucson as having one of the highest automotive accident fatality rates in the nation. Enough for the government to provide funding for Tucson to address this issue.

Saw just this week the Tucson police launched a website for Tucsonans to report bad drivers, speeders, reckless driving if you have video proof. But our hands free laws prevent you from using your cellphone if driving to capture that proof. Warning that you would be prosecuted if you violated that law is emphasized. Guess we will see lots of dashcam videos getting supplied, or passengers providing footage from their phone…
Abuse or false reporting is also going to be prosecuted and warnings of that crime are posted clearly on the new website they stood up for this reporting tool.
I wonder how it will all shake out…

Canada already is using social media postings as criminal charges for traffic offenses.

Another article posted Thursday identified top worst cities for bad driving/drivers. Tucson and Phoenix made the list, 3 AZ cities were named.

I have a virus that has a headache with it and it isn’t letting me sleep and the meds I am taking aren’t helping the headache at all…
