Help needed identify manufactures mark.
« on: March 31, 2023, 04:30:41 AM »
Hi All.
Reaching out across the pond to see if anyone can help me identify the makers mark on this advance/ retard unit. I've also got a load of points plates with this mark on. May have came off of Sandcast / K0's, or any CB SOHC/4,as we've had plenty of those through here over the years and these have been on the shelf for a very long time . Some don't have 323 part number on them. Many thanks.
Edit, just found some coils and condensers with that logo as well.

I have some OEM Hitachi condensors from 1970-something that still work.
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

Blood is thicker than water, but motor oil is thicker yet...so, don't mess with my SOHC4, or I might have to hurt you.

For the advancers on the CB500/550 models Honda has had two suppliers:
Hitachi (pn: 30220-323-005) or TEC (Toyo) (pn: 30220-323-154).
My impression is that the Hitachi parts were more on US models whereas Europe had the TEC parts.
Both will work OK. However, for servicing it is important to realise that the springs length differs.
The Hitachi advancer has 20mm springs and the TEC (Toyo) 21mm.
It has been the subject in the German forum (December 2016) and Marco, a well respected member, has sorted it out.

I should add that the Hitachi has several thin washers underneath the cam and the TEC, IIRC, only one. What the little slot in the four washers is for, I have no idea.

I have some OEM Hitachi condensors from 1970-something that still work.

I remember selling new Hitachi TV's in Canada in the early 70's, for the short time they were in the market. They offered a 25 year warranty on all their solid state devices within the TV.

So the condenser doesn't surprise me.  :)

As far as warranty, the champion in my life was: the legendary DP70 35/70mm filmprojector. Philips'warranty was... a century. When I was a student, I had a parttime job as a projectionist. Just two years ago I learned that the 70mm Philips projector I had worked with, was considered the non plus ultra by the American filmindustry. It was so good that the DP70 was rewarded an Academy Award. It's the only film projector in history that has won an Oscar. In the 60s a rich American tycoon had flown his private plane to Eindhoven, the capital of Philips (and now ASML). American cinemas met an ever growing competition by television. His mission was to make going to the cinema an experience television could not beat. After he had lit his enormous cigar, his opening line in Eindhoven was: we need the best possible 70mm projector and we want you, Philips, to make it. It was a wonderful machine.

Marco has a private tavern.

The Philips DP70 Projector At Home -
Phillips DP70 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philips_DP70
"The DP70 is a model of motion picture projector, of which approximately 1,500 were manufactured by the Electro-Acoustics Division of Philips between 1954 and about 1968.[1] It is notable for having been the first mass-produced theater projector in which 4/35 and 5/70 prints could be projected by a single machine, thereby enabling wide film to become a mainstream exhibition format, for its recognition in the 1963 Academy Awards, which led to it being described as "the only projector to win an Oscar" (though this is technically incorrect, because the award was actually a Class 2 Oscar Plaque), and for its longevity: a significant number remain in revenue-earning service as of February 2014. You made my day, 69750! That is it. I worked on a later model of the DP70, where you didn't have to change the sprockets anymore as by a simple but genial design these now had become dual purpose. Luckily in our theater I never had to do 70mm shows. To much overhead weight lifting involved. The part of my job I hated, was to go to our storeroom to collect what we called an anamorphote, the lens needed for cinemascope. It was sooo heavy. My boss had acquired that Philips (X2) real cheap. He had assisted Philips constructing the Dutch pavillion of some World Expo, either in Osaka or Canada. Philips had several projectors there, where the film Sky over Holland was shown with the celluloid running from one projector to the next so visitors no matter which way they looked, could see the film. When the Expo was over, the projectors were by then ofcourse used, second hand and Philips doubted if they would sell them as new or not. My boss Pete had the nerve to propose Philips the following: "You (Philips) have to evacuate the pavillion by tomorrow. Let me help you. I can take care of two of them and I'll even pay the shipping back to Holland. How about that?" They agreed.
Excuse me for going off topic here. On the other hand... that thing has two wheels, a drive chain, multiple sprockets and a headlight unmatched in output and beam. ;D
