Yellow Packing Grease on Chain
« on: April 01, 2023, 10:36:13 AM »
This new chain came caked with yellow grease.  Should I try to remove it?  Or just wipe it off a bit and install it?

The old lithium grease tends to dry out with age, it might come off on its own. Its hard to tell but it appears to still be sticky. I'd probably wet it with WD40, wipe what comes off easily then re-lube and run it.

I think that is what I will do.  WD40 is okay to use in cleaning o-ring chains, it seems.  I don't plan to get crazy, but just remove what is visible.  Because that waxy grease would likely attract dirt.

Yeah, if you don't wipe off the excess, it will just fling all over your bike anyway

What make is the chain? I like it when new chains come with lithium grease.

This.  The chain and sprockets came from Dennis Kirk.  Great selection and even greater service.  Their motto is "We Ship Today."  Today was a Monday in Minnesota and these were in Olympia WA on Tuesday night.
