I bought parts for my GL1000 carbs from Randaak. Years ago, I think I bought his carb manual and a video too! I think it was a VHS tape. I might still have it? Will have a look.......

Ordered my Gates T274 timing belts today. Will take the covers off this week when I get the radiator removed to change the upper and lower hoses. Will check out those pulleys too. All good ideas...keep them coming...

Agreed...a manual or an expert. Randakk said they also fix a low idle issue that was customary in the first generation Wings.

You know one gets so used to doing the 750's they become routine. It's actually fun to work on something different now.

Randakks used to have a tips section on the website 12-13 years ago when I rebuilt my 83 GL1100 carbs. Hopefully they still have it since Randall sold it off to the conglomerate corporation.

Today I went and looked at an 85 GL1200 LTD(fuel injection) with 63,000 miles on it.
It needs head gaskets, tires(good treads but from 2000!) and a few body pieces. It'd be a fun ride, But I have half a dozen CB750s in the que to bring back so I may not jump on that wing????? More than enough projects, not enough room for another project, time or money.....

Those are really nice Wings. I sold my 2000 SE a couple years ago. Wife wasn't that interested to ride anymore and I really like the 750's. I have to admit these 80's bikes you showed really do have a nice look to them. Sound good too.

The older Wings looked somewhat assembled, the new ones look moulded, they seem seamless.

You can not tell if they are good by looking at them.
If older than 5 years replace them....or do you like Russian Roulette?

Mileage is OK if the bike is constantly in use. If it has slept in lack of use for a long time and the rubber hardens with age it sets the curvature to the pulley diameter. That set size comes into play when you bring the bike back to life and each time the belt goes around the revolution, it weakens the belts where it set to the diameter around the pulleys and will break at some unknown time. Is it really worth your saving a few bucks at this time when a belt breaks and you end up with tagged pistons to valves bending valves at minimum and at worst case scenario you get broken valves and I have seen cracks and holes in pistons(split the cases to get bits of pistons from the cases). It's not a pretty picture when a belt breaks on these interference motors.
Not knowing the history of a motor is my first choice to change the belts immediately.
By the way, I've bought belts from Rock Auto for $16 each(might be more now but not what you paid of $50 for 1 belt).  Go to the website and do a search for the belt number.

I’d replace the belts so you know they are new. Check the tensioner pulleys carefully too. You also mentioned the “0” rings on the coolant tubes? I didn’t and ended up doing them soon after......

The other part that needed attention on my last ‘75 was the water pump. Shortly after “waking up” that bike, the front vent hole started dripping water. These pumps have internal seals that keep oil in the crankcase and water in the pump separate (pump takes it’s drive out of the sump ). Watch it on start up.

Thanks much for the insight to the belts. I did order the Gates T274 belts today. The water pump and coolant tubes O rings are coming too. Thermostat they are listing like 7 different ones depending on serial number. What's that all about heat range? So the 19300-PB2-023 is listed at a number of dealers on the parts locator.

Thermostat coming. Quick question which was not answered in my HONDA service manual. The O rings for the overhead coolant tubes...just slide them on or should I be using a little RTV or some other sealant on those. Same question for the 2 bolt mounts that the coolant tubes mate too. Same question for the thermostat housing and lower radiator hose housing. I see Honda only uses an O ring for those...dry or sealant? Water pump housing? Probably dumb questions, but I hate to have a leak when all is done. Thx guys...

From memory, I just really cleaned the parts and used a bit of grease on the “0” rings to make sure they slipped in smoothly. No leaks.

I use a bit of sealant on any water pump gasket. Probably Hondabond, and very little.

I did the same, although I got the DVD, which I somehow managed to lose after the carbs were done, although helpfully I still have the case it came in.
