I’ll start on the last timing cover this week. They did look pretty bad. Then comes the valve covers. Question on the timing and valve cover gaskets…do they go on dry or use some RTV in a few spots to hold them in place? Thx

Yes rtv will work.
Or a little grease will hold them in place.

Probably,I just never like to use RTV on any motorcycle engine.

Seen quite a few horror stories where RTV was overused and ended up in the motor and plugged the oil passages, causing catastrophic damage. Hondabond is for high heat use, not sure if all RTV is?

RTV and Hondabond are quite different, at least from my experience.
Also not a fan of RTV inside engines, it seems to get places where it should not be.
Also, a lot of people use way too much.

The RTV silicone gasket stuff seems to break-free from the gaskets,etc. inside the engine and then circulate inside your engine;Yamabond & Hondabond really 'bond' onto the surfaces and stay-put.

Johnie,Hondabond is a very light consistency and can be spread very thin;Yamabond 4 is a thicker consistency and is similar in that respect to RTV but much tougher.
 They both need over 24hrs+ to fully cure and solidly bond.
I like Hondabond because it can be spread on with a finger(rubber glove recommended)in either a light film or more between certain spots along with a gasketed surface(or oil seal) especially if the there's a gouge in the metal there;it can lightly fill-in where the scratch or gouge is around a gasketed surface,better than Permatex.
I used some Hondabond on a sidecover where the stator wire rubber seal grommet was badly shrunk(those things are No Longer Avail.  )and it was leaking;I first fully prepped the areas,then let some of the Hondabond drip/run into where the crevice between the case and shrunk-up rubber wire grommet is,then let it cure for a full 3 days for max. bond and it has never leaked again.
I have both products and store them in a cool place and keep them sealed from air.

Assuming the mating surfaces are flat and clean I strive to spread a coating that is almost see through. I learned this assembling steam turbine casings with a specialized rtv.

HondaBond is a semihardening material...it doesn't fully harden...giving it some flexibility.

Looking at the gaskets I can see where the original gaskets were sealed. Just a few 2 - 3 inch areas. I'll do the same.

The intakes polished up nicely. This week I plan to get the new timing belts in place. Then to start work on the left and right control switches. Decided not to use air shocks. I want to get something closer to OE. Will check on the Hagons (very costly), but looking for shock recommendations. I want something I can adjust with a spanner. Thx for your ideas…

Johnie,Hagon has a very basic pair of shocks which are spring preload adjustable with a spanner(only 3 positions)and they perform well.
They cost about $225-250. The thing I changed on the last pair of Hagon shocks was the spring rates;I installed a set of non-Hagon single-rate springs.

I think most OE-style shocks have come with dual-rate springs,but the Hagon's come with quad-rate  springs,if you can imagine such a thing;Hagon's quad-rate springs get Very stiff during their travel and feel too stiff and not a comfortable shock through their full compression stroke/travel.
Dual-rate springs are a type of progressive spring-rate where the spring is initially soft during it's first 35%? of travel,after that it gets much stiffer,some of the coils are close together and the other half? are wider spaced;I think they designed these dual-rate springs to resist bottoming-out and they came on new OEM motorcycle rear shocks and fork springs from the factory for a couple decades. I hate to admit but I'm quite accustomed to them;I plan to change that.

I want to purchase a pair of lightweight,quality rear shocks that have a single rate spring(the coils will look the same for the full length of the spring)which use the full travel(3-4"?)of the shocks to absorb road bumps,etc. and the springs allow full movement;these shocks use the hydraulic cylinder to fine-tune the ride,rather than the spring:both compression and rebound damping are adjustable & used to tune the shocks to handle many different roads and performance situations. Road racers know these shocks very well.
I imagine that means I'll need to spend around $500+ and that's not within my budget at this point.. 
Race-Tech has the right idea  ,but their prices are...  out of my range.

I would like to find a decent set of fork springs(single rate)and a decent set of rear shocks that I can purchase.
I would like a company that sells rear shock absorbers with a choice of different types of springs;either dual-rate or single rate,with more choices on spring rates. 
I find I don't get what I pay for and choices are limited,when it comes to these suspension components.
I was wondering if I could ask individuals from other countries,where I can purchase them for reasonable prices and get other choices;possibly an undiscovered source,possibly Europe,etc. ?

Race-tech has great choices,it shouldn't cost that much though.

I'm not familiar with either one of those brands.
I was reading a few of the comments about the JBS shocks on adv-rider.com and they have positive things to say about them. I'm curious how many different models of shocks they carry ?
