Geez, glade I asked. Do I need the Dow anywhere? Like between the piston and back of brake pad to reduce squeal?

I remember a fellow on here a few years back using that special Dow grease on the piston rubber seal..

I use Raybestos brake assembly lube on the piston seals. I was pleasantly surprised at how smooth the pistons came out. No rust either.

You can use the Dow everywhere except the seal for piston… it gets Castrol(etc) red rubber grease or brake fluid for installation.
The Dow will not move from where it is placed unless mechanical action moves it, it is temperature stable beyond 600F whereas the Sil-Glyde is gonna start creeping before you see those kind of temps if you are really wailing on your brakes repeatedly in curvy mountain roads… brakes typically aren’t going to be operating in that temp range. You would be boiling DOT3 fluid and probably DOT4 at 500F, forget DOT4’s temp range.

Did you put the piston in the bore w/o the seal to see where the pit lands compared to the groove?

It will when you go to put new pads on for clearance to the rotor. If it's below the seal it can cut the seal.

Pads are really good with 15,000k. However, I will error on the safe side and get a new piston. Thanks Stu!

Did you try Randakk's site? They specialized in gl1000 parts.

Hey Johnie, you might consider upgrading to the superior two-piston calipers as mentioned here:

It can be done using factory parts on your wing; Don R has done it on his and can help with any details. BTW, out of the 10 or so of these calipers I've seen, none had any pitting on the sides of the pistons, and needed no more than cleaning to put back into service. If rubber parts or pads are needed, they are readily available, as Honda used them on a wide range of models. I personally wouldn't waste any time or money on those 38mm Leadwing slugs, unless you prefer the stock look over good braking. ;)

These dual piston calipers(30 or 32mm pistons  :) )look like the best upgrade,if they will fit his GL1000 forks.

The pistons are 38mm. I have them coming from Godfrey Garage in Milwaukee area. They will all be the phenolic pistons. I have used them on some of the 750's too. I want to keep the same OE look here. Thanks for the ideas all.

I even used it on the inner fenders in the motor compartment of the Chevelle.

Hey Stev-o...yes we are in the middle of the car season. I'm going to be rebuilding the carb soon as I had an issue with the float sticking...of course when I was heading to a show. It's time...according to the PO it has been on there for about 15 years with limited miles and no issue. So I think it's time.

Sorry to hear that it needs a rebuild in the middle of the season.  Holley or Quadrajet?

I decided to give those shocks a try and will report back here. I am not an aggressive rider and think the Hagons are really more than I need.
