Thanks for the electrolysis tips. Need to get an anode rod. Am I correct that a Battery Tender connected to the rod is sufficient.

Johnie,I think a Battery Tender is what 1.25amps output? I read somewhere that a good strength power source will yield the most action? I might be mis-informed,but 'I read it on the internet'.

I use a shop battery hooked up to a 3 amp smart charger.
For the anode rod, I use 3/8" threaded rod, through a spray can lid(cut out sides as necessary to go over the tank lid hinge and latch), nut and fender washer on each side of the lid to secure to the lid.

Stu,that looks like a good set-up.

The anode/rod picks-up the old rusty stuff out of the tank and also allows itself to 'donate' it's own steel to fill the places back up inside the tank that were rusted away:does that sound right?
Do you find it works best when you seal the top cap ?

I would imagine the GL fuel tank(the actual tank is large and rides in the back,correct?)could use a long,straight anode because it wouldn't need to be bent to clear the 'center hump' on the 'up front/standard' M/C fuel tank?

Yes that is right. It does collect the rust and gives back to the tank. That is a days collection.
You want to have the rod clear any metal in what ever tank you do. Some have less space than the wing tanks have but you still have to bend some. I swing the rod back and forth, up and down to be sure it doesn't touch the tank, that is why the plastic cap is used.

Drained the GL1000 forks and wondering if anyone puts in a few ounces of Marvel Mystery oil or something to flush the bottom of the forks. Not going to mess with new seals until I make sure the bike is road worthy.

I’d leave it alone until you pull them down and give them a thorough clean. There’s nothing really nasty in there……

Good advise. I'm going to source some seals and I may end up rebuilding the forks this winter anyway.

Ordered fork seals and dust covers which are still available from HM. Figured these things are almost 50 years old so they'd be way overdue. No sign of any leaking, but when I drained them the amount in each was not the same. So I figured they probably leaked in the past. I'll get at it after this week of deer hunting and Thanksgiving.

QUESTION: The right handlebar switch was gone so I was able to source a new one. There are 2 solid black wires with male ends. My harness only has room for 1 solid black wire. Can anyone steer me to where the other black one goes? There's only 5 male wires on this switch and the other 3 are accounted for. Thanks

Can you trace the wires back into the switch, see where they go? I know the GL1000 is a bit goofy, in that you can crank it with the starter button with the kill switch in the "off" position (it helps fill the carb bowls without sending spark to the coils), so that might account for the "extra" wires.

None of the wiring diagrams I'm looking at have two solid black wires going to the switch, but if you can cross-reference on the switch you have, you might be able to figure out what color the other black is "supposed" to be.

I'm not on the the forum as much as I use to be Johnnie, but I can't believe I just ran across your GW project today. Those early Wings are really nice and good luck with yours and like always the restoration's you do are top notch! I still have my black 77 GL1000 that I got back some years ago. It's been parked for a while and needs some TLC. Seeing yours is getting me motivated to give mine some needed attention

A little trivia here, these early naked Wings (75-77) were fast bikes back in the day and the only production bike that accelerated faster was the Kawasaki Z1.

I'm envious as I want a sulfur yellow wing like Johnies but cannot afford one, I have the skills but not the experience with MC projects and fear/anxiety keeps me from doing some things as risks are real... I want an early GL1000 ideally with a Vesco Rabid Transit fairing. I have a full Vetter setup I bought from a friend who is a police officer and fellow rider, Joe, in a town south of Nashville. So, worst case that would go on the Wing if I got one.
The GL650 would not get kicked out of my garage either...it might be the way I have to go as it is a cheaper route. But if Johnnie wants to will me his Wing I after he is done I might have the funds when he is gone but I likely will be gone before him... I just have a feeling my time on earth is short. My family thinks I'm going to go soon too, as they fear I'm that way or suicidal. It's bad when your mom wants to know how much cremation costs are as I have had the conversation with my brother about my final wishes and that so don't want people false grieving if they never kept in touch I'm not giving them any reason to soothe their conscience saying something nice about me if they cannot or didn't want to keep in touch with me while I'm alive.

I like that vintage Sulphur Yellow color on the GL1000 better than the deep yellow on the newer Wing.

My brother said when he was working at the Honda shop some yellow body kits came in from Honda, they were sent to convert existing inventory bikes to try to pick up sales numbers.

That factory yellow on the later Wings looks very bright;almost like a safety color.

The guy I bought 6 cb750's and 1 gl1000 from, kept his yellow late Goldwing. He has since moved back to the area. I'm pretty sure he has sellers' remorse even though he did nothing with any of the bikes before I bought them.

I agree on the yellow. At first it was to bright for me, but then it grew on me. I can see the safety factor in the color. So the PO cut 5 wires towards the end of the left handle bar switch loom. I went through my wiring stash and got the 5 wire colors to match. All have the bullet connector in place so easy peasy to solder these wires in place. I already got the loom through the bars so I don't have to do the pulling with the new connections in place. Once that is all connected I will put power to the harness to see what we have here.

You may recall from an earlier post the PO (deceased) bought the bike from a guy in WI, but never titled it. The title was signed by the guy he bought it from with no date or price listed which was good for me. So I just bypassed the deceased PO and completed the rest of the title. Mailed it in and got my title yesterday. As you all know sometimes it's such a hassle to get a title and you have to jump through hoops and inspections to get one. One time the DMV would not give me a title (750) as I only had the registration from Vermont. Told them Vermont does not title bikes over 20 years old. They checked the Vermont DMV and still would not title me. The next day I went to a different DMV with the same info and got the title. So they don't all play the same game.

Yes Casey...she looks good "naked." Mine will be the same. I did get the wiring repaired on the left switch yesterday and got the handlebars and both switches back on. It's taking some shape now.
