Took the GL out getting ready for winter and the tach is squealing pretty loud. I did rule out the cable by using a drill on the unit. Man is that loud. So what suggestions do you guys have. I imagine the oil pot is dry from 20+ years sitting in a garage before I got it. I see the guy in the Netherlands at CBMTRS.com does gauge work. Anyone in the USA do this work? Thx for your expertise. I got the winter to work on it. Going to chrome the back of both gauges too. PS the speedo works fine.

Hi Johny...shipping to Europe will be expensive, I have not used this guy but he gets good reviews. Worth a call to get a quote and he's in GA, so quick easy shipping with a flat rate box.
But you may want DIY.

BTW - do you winterize the Chevelle?   Feel free to send it down here, I will take good care of it!

I had a speedometer that squealed on my FT500, due to a dry bushing for the part the end of the cable plugs into. I fixed it by forcing a light grease into the bushing:

Clever. Lots of really old cars and trucks had lubricators that worked that way. You filled the cup with grease and tightened the top down a bit, every so often. When the lid stopped turning down, open up and refill. This old REO had several.

Thanks for this tip scottly from your post below in 2014. I'm going to give it a try.
There was a thread about this about 4 years ago, and after having gone through it myself for the last two days, thought I should share my cure:
Unscrew the speedo cable, and fill the void in the knurled end with a light lithium grease, like Lubriplate. When you screw the end back onto the speedo, some of the grease will be forced into the bushing. It might help to have the front wheel off the ground and spinning while you tighten the end. In my case, I rode the bike up and down the street, added another shot of grease, rode the bike again and bingo, all the noise stopped within a block, and the needle was steady instead of jumping up and down.

Would white lithium be comparable Lubriplate? I went on Amazon and found Lubriplate to have a few different tubes listed. Wasn't sure which one to get so thought maybe my white lithium might work?

The stuff I used was a white grease that came in a small squeeze tube, but I don't recall the part number. It seemed slightly thinner than the white lithium grease that comes in the big tub? Come to think of it, I've added oil to the regular white grease to thin it out some before.
I once lubed up a speedo by propping it up with the threaded part submerged in a small cup of oil, and leaving it for a day or two, occasionally turning the inner doohickey to help wick the oil up into the bushing, but it wasn't mounted on a bike.
