Where do I start?
« on: June 10, 2005, 06:20:58 PM »
I just bought 5 750's - 1 '71, 2 '73's, 1 '76 F and 1 '78 k.  One of the '73's is the closest to running.  New battery, and cleaned carbs, I pulled the # 1 plug to see if I had spark, and nothing.  So, my question is where do I look first?  coils? points? or something else?  Please help!

Thanks,

...dag!! 5 bikes?  U jumped in feet first didn't ya?  If no spark, I would first make sure the plugs are good...are the plugs new?  If not spring for a new set.  Next I'd go to ponints...make sure they are are clean, when u turn the ignigion on are th lights on?  Open and close the points with a screw driver, when u do, you should see a spark.

Yeah, all 5 in one deal on eBay.  no lights when key is on. just got the battery charged and put it in.  will get new plugs, but is there any one thing that would stop all electricity?

Thanks,

exactly.  The other '73 has one with 3 fuses in it.  This one has no fuse box at all.

Well, maybe a bad ground, or without the protection of any fuses, maybe something has gotten fried.

Take the fuse box off of the other `73 and hook it up.
Red striped = headlight
red = main
orange = taillight

If the red main was just hooked up without a fuse you might have toasted wires.

Update:

I got fire!!!  My son happened to walk in front of the bike when I was turning the key, and he noticed that the headlight came on for a second.  Seems I was looking for it at the second position from "off" and it has power at the first position.  I got it to burn some carb cleaner sprayed into the carbs, but the petcock is gunked up with old gas so more cleaning tomorrow when its light again.  I did put the fuse panel on it, but I know I got some wires crossed cause the only fuse in it is the main one, none in the headlight or taillight slot but they both work??!!?  I know I got the main running through the fuse, and I also know I don't have the other 2 wired right.  It felt SOOOO good to hear the 4 into 4's bark some life!!  I will keep you posted on my progress, and try to get some pics, too.  Any suggestions would also be greatly appreciated.

Got it to run around the yard in first gear!  It wouldn't do second though.  running a little rough, especially when I give it gas too fast.  Nice and easy on the throttle, and it will tach up to about 5k.  Any suggestions what to do next?

Thanks in advance,

Yup, had to. the slides were stuck, and the bowls were full of varnish.  I think it just needs to be run.  The more I have run it, the bettere it got....I like that in a bike   ;D
