Engine diaper- Man Cup series requirement
« on: March 22, 2023, 04:15:35 PM »
The new Man Cup owner now requires that all motorcycles utilize some type of oil retention device in case of lower engine failure. The idea is to capture enough oil to allow the rider to safely slow downt and move to the side of the track. Less on oil on the racing surface will minimize clean up and down time. My wife is pretty good at sowing so I asked her to try her skills at making a few universal diapers to fit the KZ and GS based dragbikes. She got that design down fairly well so she's been selling some to a few racers. I then asked to to make one to fit our 750 SOHC motors. She finished up a prototype for me and it turned out good.  She still wants to tweak it a bit but I'm satisfied myself. Bill and Wilbur recently put in their requests so those should be done in a week or so. All of the materials are made of Kevlar, unlike the basic ballistic nylon material used by Taylor and Vanson. This is only designed for a sidewinder exhaust system and probably won't work on a bike with stock exhaust or one that exits under the motor.

The wife completed a diaper for one of our members tonight. It's made of Kevlar and meets all Man Cup series requirements.  It'll ship with pigmat for absorbency.

But what about heat management now if that is required there is going to be lots of overheated motors.

This engine restraint only covers the oil pan area. Most of the extreme heat is generated in the top end of the engine. As you know, SoHc engines utilize a dry sump system with an oil tank. More importantly,  this is for a drag race application whereby the engine is only run for a matter of 12 seconds or less at full throttle with lots of cool down time between rounds of racing.

Frank's experience with other air cooled bikes in other series that have required oil retention for quite some time convinced me that I will not need an oil cooler. Air cooled and let-r-rip!

We popped an oil pan spot weld on our drag car once. The diaper caught almost all of the oil, we noticed a small drip sunday morning when we opened the trailer.
