Here's what's going on. 74 Cb750 worked amazing last season. I just threw the trickle charged battery in and initially when I turned the key it would get power but as soon as I hit start I got 1 click at the Solenoid and it would power off (no actual turn over)

Now when I turn the key in the ignition it's not powering on at all but if I move the key around and or move the wires around from the ignition to the coil pack it flickers dimmly but will not stay powered on. Seems as though it's like a bad connection.

So far I have check the battery it has adequate power.
The Solenoid I've checked and it has power.
The key ignition has power on both sides of the connecting plug.

This is currently where I am at. Any ideas?

Odds are I will end up taking it to a shop but this is my first CB and first problem with it. I would love to diagnose it myself and do the work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What is “ adequate power” at your battery? What is the actual voltage before you turn the key, as you turn the key, and after you hit the START button?

I'd look at the ignition switch and it's wires/connections as a start...

A bad battery may have voltage but not supply enough current to make anything work. I had one like that once.

Sounds like bad battery to me

I’m in the camp of the battery having a cell with surface charge that fails when any load is applied. Experienced this a couple times over the years. Even had a cell die like this when on a maintainer over the winter once.

Unplugging and plugging connectors back together a few times can temporarily fix any light oxidation that has grown in a connector…
Properly cleaning the connections is the long term fix.

I have it back on the charger right now. I will get all the numbers today. Battery was at 12.34 V though.

I did do that and one of the pins in the Connector does have a bit of corrosion. It does have power though. I know you can replace the starter side but the other Connector is wired into the main harness so I'm not sure if that's a part or the whole harness that I'd have to replace.

Is there a way to diagnose that specific problem or I just get a new battery and hope for the best? I did buy the bike used so I am not sure how old it actually is.

Anything specific that makes you think that? I'm not questioning it especially after a few have now posted it about dead cells. Just like to problem solve it. It is a project after all. Thanks!

Answer the above sequentially. That will indicate the health of your battery. Use a multimeter.

Ok, so fresh off the charge it's 13.78V.

13.43V at the ignition before turning (now sitting around 12.5V with the on/off cycles but holding at this voltage)

Voltage drops to 1V and lower when key is turned to on position and no actual power comes on. Then randomly it turned on and the voltage was 12.5V.

As soon as I hit start the solenoid clicks once and I loose all power.

A couple times moving the key around and moving the wires got it to power on but it's not doing that anymore.

If the key is turned back to off the voltage goes back up to 12.5V at the key, solenoid and positive battery terminal but if I turn it back to on all of these locations drop to 1V or less.

When batteries get old they can lose plate material, as when recharging the plate metal migration may not go back where it migrated from during discharge.  This means you can lose plate area, which is where the big amps come from.  It is also possible to lose 99% of the plate area in a single cell.  There is enough plate to give a promising voltage.  But, as soon as big amps are demanded, the voltage drops to near nil, only to spring back up when load is removed.  Most battery supply sellers will offer to load test your battery to see what it’s condition is.  They will charge it as recommended and then check voltage with rated load on the battery.  If it passes that test, then I’ve seen similar maladies with poor connections, as in corroded, where the corrosion passes voltage until higher currents are demanded.  That can appear to self heal too when load is removed.  Make sure all your battery power cable connections are clean shiny and tight.

A friend had a CB400 that would randomly die.  After some head scratching and exploration, I finally found the main power wire into the harness with a corroded crimp on a ring lug.  Just bumping it would make the power go or come back…for a while.  Sure enough, a confession that pot holes often killed the bike, but not after putting a new ring terminal on the solenoid where the main battery cable attached.  The bike was then reliable again, and a smile appeared on my friend.

Thanks for the explanation. I am going to go tomorrow and have the battery tested. I am curious if the ignition is also not working since I can play around with the wires and sometimes get a connection. It seems as though a new battery is step one though.

In the end it was the battery. Thank you for educating me on diagnosing the problem. Hopefully it helps someone in the future that's new to this.

Batteries cause all sorts of problems, on a 1500 wing you can have a battery that spins the motor fast and for long time but if the voltage drops below 11 when cranking it wont spark
