To replace a throttle cable, I will need to separate the clamshell halves of the throttle control at the handlebar. Correct?
There is currently a bit of free play in this throttle cable system. The handle on the right side of the handlebars can be rotated a bit without any movement of the throttle shaft. I think this free play can be eliminated. I think that adjusting the "pull" cable to eliminate the slack is not going to have the adverse effect of increasing idle speed. There is no spring in the throttle mechanism, such as at the handlebar. The only spring in this mechanism is the one on the throttle shaft. So.....I think that all the free play in this cable system can be eliminated (obviously also avoiding actual tension between the pull and push cables, which could probably cause binding at the handlebar control). The cable system would still allow the throttle to return to the throttle stop position set using the thumbscrew on the carbs. I think that additionally, one of the tricks to a snappy throttle linkage is to make sure there is no binding in the cables themselves. Which is why I have a fresh pull cable on the bench and a push cable on the way.
Am I crazy? Okay....don't answer that. Am I understanding this throttle control system effectively?
Yes
