Cylinder head cover removal question cb550

I'm looking to remove the cylinder head cover and breather cover on my 75 cb550 and paint it. My question is – is it as simple as removing, masking off the parts I don't want the paint to get on, and reinstalling it with a new gasket? Or will I need to readjust the valves or something after it's been pulled off?

You will need to adjust the valves afterwards, but you MUST release the tappets prior to removing, and use rubber bands looped over the intake/exhaust tappets during removal to prevent a bent valve.

The rocker arms (tappets) are attached to the underside of the cover, not part of the head. That is why the procedure differs.

How about the cam chain? Doesn't it go through the head and cam gear or is the cam lower than the head? I'm not familiar with the 500/550 internals.

The cylinder cover has all the rockers.  The cam is in the cylinder head proper.  Stays there with just a cylinder cover removal. 

But, that cylinder cover install has risk of bending valves if care not taken to keep tappet adjusters off the sides of the valve stems.

No gasket but a shaped O ring
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!
