Riddle me this?

Just curious. Finished cleaning and painting my 78 750 engine and was wondering what these 4 indentations would be used for. They are also 3 of them on the bottoms of the engine.

Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

They are there to identify what mold used for that casting.
Although the numbers are hard to see they may also identify when the piece was cast.
This would be ancient internal Honda foundry information, likely impossible to decode without ancient Honda documentation.

 Agreed, there are numbers in the bottom of those hexes that track the castings in case they find a running defect, they can tell which cases to pull out of assembly.

Very interesting and yea I can vaguely see numbers at the bottom of each impression.
