Burnt points test...
« on: April 10, 2023, 06:49:32 PM »
Wondering if anyone out there knew of a proficient way to tell if you have "burnt" your points on the cb750k's? Say, in the case of leaving your ignition on with the points touching for several minutes. (NOT that I've done this)

Just open them up and look closely. If they look blackened, pitted and coarse, clean them up or replace. I use a Blue Point style hard board sanding file, but any small file or even folded paper will do.

I will warn against using sand paper.  These abrasives always sacrifice some of their grit which embeds into the metal.  This grit is not conductive to electrical current and doesn’t melt away.  At best it reduces metal contact area which increases heating of the remaining contact surface.  At worst, the grit stands proud blocking full closure and further reducing contact area in large places.

In short, embedded grit really decreases point life.  If you must sand, be aware you’ll need to replace the points soon or that you will be disappointed in point life expectancy and the need to keep dressing the point contacts frequently.

Point files, being being metal, are conductive, leaving any bits of itself in the contact surface to no electrical detriment.

If you have a Swiss Army knife that has the little magnifying glass take a look.
Or use any other fairly powerful magnifying glass.

Back in the 70s when points were in lots of bikes, Snap-on trucks carried a box of 5 of these files/$6.00
I carried one in my wallet and a white business card to clean the points after filing.
