I almost miss the backfire
« on: June 14, 2005, 02:20:17 PM »
Well this weekend I had the Pleasure? of working on my bike. I have had this running rich problem for the last couple of years now. This weekend to took some ideas that us bike witchdoctor come up with and tied them. I swaped the spark leads for 2 and 3 to see if the problem would move from #2 to #3. It did no so I KNEW it was the carbs >:(
Well took them off and checked floats and made sure float seat was clean and actually swapped the floats from 2 and 3. MADE SURE my accel pump sealed and worked correctly. Looked at my needle and found nothing but a needle that looked like it was out of the package (less than 14000 miles). Put it all together with out thinking I had really accomplished something, other than pulling the carbs off...again.  Started it and......what the hell! No more backfire from #2!!!! ;D
holy crap holy crap holy crap! I never though it would happen!

ok now that I am done gushing about it, I need to adjust low speed mix. My screw are on the engine side and if I remember correctly, I tunr my screws IN to lean the mix, out to richen.  Is this right? I keep forgetting so this time I am writting it down!

Thanks to all those who have trouble. Nothing like using someone elses misery for MY gain!! ;D

I think that is more due to the reactions of other drivers as you backfire next to them!

Glad you got if figured out. Mine backfire's alot. I was up last night cleaning the only points I got till the new one's come in. There a little pitted and have new plugs. I dwelled the points and got 1&4 dead on time, but 2&3 where just a little retarded. I stopped by my local fix-it place and knows the older bike's. He took one look at my 4 to 1 and said they load up and back fire. Humm.
Do most people's 4 to 1 pipe pop? doesn't sound really like a backfiring.

Yes, if adjusting screw is on the engine side, it is a fuel screw and IN = leaner, OUT = richer. If screw is on airbox side it is an air screw, IN = richer. Think about it, once you do it will seem so logical you will never forget it  ;)

Check the muffler on your 4 into 1. A lot of them are a sloppy fit & suck air. Anyway, what's up with a backfire? Sounds lovely on the overrun.
