Gas cap rubber seal installation question
« on: April 16, 2023, 02:23:08 PM »
I replaced the crumbling gas cap seal on my CB500 tank with a fresh new one.
There's a thick side and a thin side. Logic told me the thick side faced out to seal against the filler neck. But I CANNOT get the cap to latch that way.
 Do I have it backwards?

Well, I don't think it's the seal. The new, genuine Honda locking gas cap won't catch even with the seal out.

Scott, a long time ago (15 yrs), I got a new shiny genuine gas cap and it didn’t fit my tank. Checking the part numbers, I found a later part number was substituted and the later part had a thicker gasket. I told the vendor about the swap and they weren’t listening/didn’t care, but I bought the early thinner gasket and fitted it to the new cap and all was well.
It’s 15 years Scott, I don’t know if I can dig out the details, but I see you have 71 CB 500, mine is a 71 CB750, simlar parts?

I got it. I removed the latch from the tank and installed it on the cap. That seemed to "reset" something. It's working now, but tight.

By the way, I just discovered this today. That's a MUCH easier way to install the seal!
