Yep, a puppy
« on: April 21, 2023, 10:41:31 AM »
Just to add a little pick me up to our old age, the Wife and I have adopted a 10 week old puppy from our local rescue shelter.  It has been five years since we lost our last dog to the ravages of old age and at times there been as many as five in the home.  All through the years they have all been saved from pounds or abandonment and there has never been a pure breed in the bunch.  I swore there would be no more after that last dreaded final trip to the vet, but then we laid eyes on Byrdie, I knew it was a mistake to go look at the puppy in person after seeing the picture on the site.  It has been about 24 hours since she came through the door and Lord please give me strength, I had totally forgotten what it is like to have a baby K9 present.  So far our two old house cats have armed themselves and I have lost my favorite old pair of flip flops, but when she looks at you with that innocent face and falls asleep snoring in your lap, you know in the long run life is going to be a lot more full of love as time marches on......

My wife found a little doggy running loose, she brought him in, and he jumped on the couch right next to me. I was almost sorry when his owner came to collect him.

Any idea as to what breed/breeds little Byrdie is or how big it will get ?  I have always had German Shorthairs and after my last one passed at 15 a little over 4years ago I thought no more till my wife changed my mind ! She has a way of doing that.  Molly is 4 now and really keeps me moving with very long walks through woods, fields etc. every night.  What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.  ;D

The breed is of the Heinz 57 variety.  Her sister looked like she had a lot of Australian Shepherd in her, Byrdie looks Lab to me, she is going to be a good size dog however much to my liking.....

She should be pretty smart if there's Australian Shepherd in her.

Nice dog and good for you!

There was a time we had four dogs, two airedales - if you know what that means. It's less than a year since the last dog went to sleep and I am really not sure what the future holds for us.

Amyway, I got the sidecar.  I might need a riding buddy  ;D

Dogs are great for keeping the heating bill down in the winter.
In the summer they make sure you don't get too fond of your favorite chair.

I hear you Britman...we've lost 2 retrievers at 13 years old 1 year apart. We went a year without a dog and this little girl Zoey found us at 5 months. They do bring happiness, fun and laughter to the household. Congrats on cute little Byrdie! You'll have fun and she will love you back unconditionally.

Good for you! We’ve been “without” for several months. After we lost Max 2.0 we decided to wait until after our trip to Australia/ NZ. We’ve been back two days and my wife is already phoning around.

Pretty sure we’ll be joining your club soon!

John, that’s funny. Amazing how some women are mission focused after you indicate you will do such and such after…they are all over it after that event or date. Others wade into it gently…

Your wife has been thinking about this and planning it her mind for a while apparently.

Good luck on the search for your four legged companion.

Already can fetch and return, pretty well house trained, knows a few basic commands, will go to her crate at night on her own, already spending time in the garage with me and any tool that hits the floor is fair game. Today was the first trip to the landfill in the truck and the attendant gave her a treat, so I am sure that will be a reoccurring event. I should have done this sooner, I did not realize how bad I missed a dog.  Of course she is a puppy, I will probably not sleep past 6am for at least the next year and one cat will probably need therapy, but the laid back yellow tabby and her are now best friends, with both in my lap at night at the same time.  The chicken in the picture is her favorite toy of all time, yes it squeaks, very loudly, during every TV program we get interested in, somehow that seems OK.......

English Bulldogs are notorious for health issues. Cannot tolerate high heat for extended periods and all but cannot reproduce on their own. (Have to use artificial methods to get them pregnant.) If there were ever a breed that should go extinct naturally it is them. Friend has one and I have house sat for them many times. The folds of skin around their face have to be cleaned to keep them from developing infections.  I’m not fond of the breed at all.

Glad the new puppy has found a good home Britman and the pup is learning quickly.
Sounds like it wants your rapt attention, not your favorite tv show… time to get a dvr in case you really want to catch what was said or happened…

You are correct in every way! This one is not a year old yet and has cost my son plenty. NOT my favourite breed, for sure.

Our daughter and her family got a golden retriever pup, his brother is available but my wife won't pull the trigger.
Since she appoints herself to animal care, I'll let her decide. I don't think any of our dogs ever knew they needed to go out because she had already anticipated it.

We watched the little hairy needle toothed velociraptor this week. That cured me of wanting a puppy. Damage to the house is minimal and only small amounts of blood were spilled.

Just turned 6 months old and going to be a good sized beast.  The Wife sent her DNA in for a break down....
30% Boarder Collie
28% Australian Shepard
20% American Pit Bull Terrier
13% Lab
3% Rottweiler
The remainder just pure Super Mutt

Great dog, super smart, knows all of her commands, will kennel on demand, eats like a horse, still loves to lay in your lap, but will still try to herd a cat in a heartbeat.  Follows me everywhere and everybody at the landfill and hardware store knows her name and provides endless dog treats.  She spends a great deal of time with me in the garage and we are still working on the difference between a flat head and phillips.  Eventually I am going to have her go to the JIS set when needed.  Seriously folks, I cannot believe I went for over 6 years without a dog.  I have missed a lot of pure unadulterated love asking nothing in return but a good belly rub....

The first 2 breeds on that list are both scary smart. So while you think you are training the dog, in reality its the other way around!
