Moto GP COTA
« on: April 23, 2023, 11:44:02 AM »
I watched a replay of last weeks Moto GP from Texas. The race was won by Alex Rins on a Honda RC213V after the Ducati which was leading wiped out. What I thought was remarkable was the cameras and telemetry from the motorcycle and I think I saw a top speed of 216mph indicated, WOW! I had no idea that the bikes were capable of that.

I watched that yesterday also. Quite a few wipe-outs early on in that race.

Jorge Martin set the MotoGP top speed record at Mugello last year at 225.9 mph.
You only go around once in life so it might as well be on a motorcycle.

I was at COTA last week to watch the MotoGP racing. The weather was glorious and we had a great day. There were definitely a lot of crashes in the main event but nobody seems to have an answer as to what the problem was. Some riders mentioned the wind which was blowing pretty good that day. They think the wind may have been taking the temperature out of the tires, particularly the front, and causing alot of those low side falls.

The surprise at COTA this year was seeing a Honda rider on the top step of the podium - on a satellite bike to boot. Honda was winless in Moto GP last year, rarely looking even remotely competitive. Honda has historically done well in Texas but predominantly with Marquez riding and he's currently out with an injury. Their fortunes might be changing with both Rins and Mir on Hondas this year since Suzuki quit the game at the end of last season. The next few European races should reveal if their fortunes are truly changing. I do like to see them on the pointy end of the race.

I didnt make it this year, had other plans, but what a fantastic track!   I enjoyed watching the race at turn 19, a lot of wipeouts there.

Here is the highlight video for anyone that missed it...

It was a great GP and it is good to see Honda wining again but Rins is a COTA specialist and has always gone well there . We will have to wait until the weekend to see if it was Honda or Rins that made the difference . Jerez is a very different circuit no very slow corners like COTA . I think it might suit Aprilia or Yamaha a bit better so with luck it won’t be a Ducati cup race .

Jorge Martin set the MotoGP top speed record at Mugello last year at 225.9 mph.

It's not just the top speed of these bikes but also the stopping power. At the end of the back straight at COTA, they're going from 215+ mph down to 45mph in the blink of an eye. The tv commentators are always talking about the tremendous forces exerted through the arms and shoulders of the riders which you don't really appreciate on tv.

And sitting up at 215? I’ll have to study that a bit. Seems like a carefully coordinated maneuver.
