Polish? Or Not?
« on: May 01, 2023, 10:09:31 AM »
The engine covers on my very early S/C were really corroded and scaly! The vapour blasting did an amazing job on them. I usually polish these to a high shine, but I like the way these look “as is”.

 Looking good.

They look good. I'd leave them as they are for now, you can always polish them later if you get bored & feel like a change, but you couldn't un-polish them

If for re-sale I would try to make them look as stock as possible be it hand rubbing or some other process maybe including coating. If a keeper then whatever you like best.

I was looking at the rest of the bike today. I’ve already polished the fork legs, and they are very nice. I’ll do these to match.

Those parts look really nice, but they'll be harder to keep clean, and will stain easier.  Polished, parts are much easier to maintain.

The vapour blast finish is good but not great sometimes.

For my liking (for what that's worth) I like the more stock look. I usually wet sand up to very fine paper, then use new 0000 steel wool to finish. Work the steel wool in one direction and when the piece gets warm, it blackens somewhat. Wash in varsol well and then rub with some polish to coat the part. Ends up very close to original finish. I've read that this embeds minute steel particles in the aluminum, but I have never had an issue.

Most like the high polish and that's fine, plus can be easier than above! Whatever floats your boat.

I’ll try this! If I don’t like it, I can always go all the way..... Thanks!
