What is a good normal handlebar for our bikes ?
« on: May 04, 2023, 12:44:25 PM »
My eyes glaze over when I try to measure bars, the set I have a guy at Action Fours suggested 30 years ago, time for a new set. Something readily avail would be best :-). My bike has a windjammer if that has any impact on choices.

Do your handlebars have those set back blocks that move the bars back a little. Seems most bikes I have bought over the years with a Vetter had those.

I like the CB400F repro bars. Especially if you want your wiring to run internally. They come pre-drilled ready to go. Low profile, not granny bars at all.

I used the David Silver Spare reproduction 53100-300-610P on my k1.

I like superbike bars on my 750 but I dont have a fairing.  4 into 1 has a good selection, you basicly need to decide how much rise you want? Superbike bars are 2"...

I decided on the 4:1 69-71 replicas. 53100-300-000.   They said a flatter bar was used in 72 and then they went back to this bar in 73. Not earth shattering if I don't like them, I'll just order the flatter 72 style if I don't care for them.

Do you have a picture of your bars now ? Hopefully the new bars will have enough clearance with the fairing. Maybe the reason I ran into so many set-back clamps with stockish bars with fairings was for comfort.

I am ashamed of how nasty the bars on there now look :-(. I guess we will see when they arrive. I have new controls so will not have to do anything irreversible to try them for fit. A friend of my dads had a GL1000 and he had installed TWO sets of pull backs and he just thought that was the coolest thing on earth LOL.

When I got the existing ones from Action Fours I did not tell them I was running a fairing. I tried to measure the ones I had at the time and the guy said my numbers did not make any sense, and he said he would just send me something "normal" and it worked out fine :-).

The lower bars are comfortable.
My blue K6 has a Highway Hawk HH-55-255.
No holes for wiring, but possible to add I suppose.

It is rather wide so I cut it 60mm on each side.
To 800mm.

50mm can be fine too. Room for throttle grip and MC, banjo free from tacho.
I just ordered another one locally here for next build.

Many sellers, eBay too.

My favorite are European sport touring. They look a lot like PeWe’s but narrower. Back when K&N bent handle bars the European sport touring were narrow like the 400’s with drill your own holes. I like a palms down neutral grip for very long rides. The European narrow style leans you forward a bit so 70+ mph freeway speeds wind buffets don’t feel like you’re doing neck exercises with a helmet on.

Around town 35 mph with factory foot pegs stock stock with some pull back palms angle towards each other with straight wrist.

Bench racing in the parking lot big pull backs, palms facing each other like two handed drinking so you can rev her up, lazy boy wide seat sitting position.

The newer Honda 400 handlebar they’re using on the new 2014 cb1100 with mini bullet headlight fairings are too straight for me for in town riding. Feels like you’re riding a dirt bike with set back pegs on the newer 1100…but feel better at interstate speeds.. still a little to straight for +2 hour one way rides..

The simple answer to your question is: have the handlebars your bike came OEM with in Europe. You'll have the benefit of the best riding position and you can continue to have OEM cables (superior over cheap aftermarket products). That is as long as - on ordering - you pay attention to the appropiate parts numbers. Consult the Parts lists or CMSNL for them. I never understood why the US market had those 'sit up and beg' handlebars. They're an insult to the design of our bikes IMO.
