Oil (?) in bottom of NOS gas tank
« on: May 13, 2023, 06:03:07 PM »
Got around to finally mount NOS tank that has sat in original box for last 35 years.  Found oil (?) in bottom of tank when I went to attach petcock.  I assume it was placed there to prevent rust?

Rinse out with gas or something else?

Yes and yes
I put 2 stroke oil in after de-rusted to preserve the tanks I clean.

Back in the 70s the owners manual said for long term storage to empty the gas and fog the tank with light oil.

So outboard motor fogging oil is okay, right? Easier to use as it comes in an aerosol and you can cover the sides vs only the bottom.

There's nothing quite like that new tank smell!  ;D

Yeah, just rinse it out with a little gas and you should be good to go.

Yeah, it'll be fine.  The gas will dilute the oil well enough, and apart from MAYBE being a touch smokey for a little bit, the engine won't care.  Plenty of engines with bad valve seals burn oil just fine.

I just pour in a few Oz and swirl the tank around to coat all the surfaces.

That's what I used on my chopper tank after cleaning it out.
