Topic: Titled in CA

I bought three 350Fs in various states of disrepair and neglect.  One was titled.  I had the titled transferred and almost have it completely rebuilt, except for the #$%^& leaking carbs.

Another one I just completely disassembled and sold off for parts (it had an unserialized engine).

I want to build the third one as a cafe racer.  I got a couple of forms from DMV, which I have completed, but I was told to take the forms (and incomplete engine and frame) to CHP.  CHP had no idea what to do with the engine, frame, and forms.  I would like suggestions from anyone that has gone through this process.  Thanks.

Calif is the pickiest state to do ANY DMV business.  Your experience is directly related to how little the person behind the counter is either willing to help or knowledgeable about your issue. Make an appointment with someone higher up than a  outer person and do it in the a.m.  They get more obstinate in the afternoon.  Explain what you have done so far and what the reaction was ar the CHP, do this in.person not on for xyz. They have ways to take care of you but they don't want you to know that. Plus supervisors can over ride both red tape and penalties.  And NO MATTER HOW MUCH THEY PISS YOU OFF, OR WHAT LEVEL OF IGNORANCE THEY DISPLAY, DON'T YELL AT THEM. Used car dealers and salvage yards deal with them all the time, so there is a better way than you have been told so far.

There are verifiers at some of the CHP offices. You need to go to one in your county (or one connected to your zip code). As long as you have frame and engine numbers they can complete the documentation after verifying the components are not stolen. An easier, although more expensive route, is to go through a commercial DMV processing place, but confirm they are familiar with motorcycles. Although you will still need to take it to the CHP, all the paperwork should be in-line.
