Topic: Silicon Exhaust Sealant?

I used the sealant that came with the headers I bought from Delkevic (4-1) and ended up having to take the exhaust back off. Now that I'm ready to reassemble the exhaust, I was wondering if there were some options out there that are better than others (i.e Brand names, types of exhaust sealant, ect)?

Thoughts and opinions? 🤔

Around the outside of each of the 4 pipes at the tip that slides into the collector.

To me the Delkevik red exhaust sealant looks just like the red fire block sealant we used to use to seal holes where plumbing and wiring travel between floors of houses.

That's funny because my old man said the same thing when he stopped by the first time I was applying it! He said it was like the stuff they used when plumbing.

I've had good luck with Permatex high temperature silicone.  It's available in black, as well as red.

I doubt if any of the silicone sealers have a temperature rating much over 600*. And much lower for continuous exposure.

Delkevik has great customer service. The system for the 80' GS 1100E had a the welded on nut to attach the baffle broken free out of the box. Right away they sent us a new baffle for free and said keep the original one.
We ordered the system for the 77' KZ 1000LTD that didn't come new with a centerstand but has the mounting points. We put a centerstand on it so needed a centerstand stop. We contacted them and they sent a stop for free.

Call them, they'll probably send you a new tube.

i use red or copper which ever i have on hand,clean with turps(turpentine) the area first and dry it,then with turps on a rag clean the excess once assembled,ive had it hold well for ages.

I'm not familiar with Delkevic but you need to put a sealer on parts when installing them. They must be down in the silencer

True, but it has always worked well and lasted for me on muffler/silencer slip joints.

Normally the temps at the silencers isn't in the 600F range. The catalyst if equipped has to be very close to the exhaust manifold because of the operating temperature they need to convert the exhaust gasses into acceptable emissions. But the mufflers are way hot enough to brand you but aren't operating in the 600F and above temps. Anyone got an IR temp gun they can take some reading of CB exhausts at various points?

Thank you everyone for your replies. I did end up going with Permatex's Muffler & Tailpipe Exhaust Sealant. It's rated at 2000° F, non-expanding, and a few other great qualities. It states it great for use at joining joints.

You sure that's removable? I think that hardens

Oh well that's not what I want then. It didn't state that it hardens or that it doesn't. Maybe I'll just contact Delkevic customer support for a new tube.
