O'Reilly housebrand 20W50 oil
« on: May 29, 2023, 10:17:22 AM »
O'Reilly opened a store in our town. I am pleased, because they carry KN-401 filters.  The only other place in town that stocks filters for CB750  is Autozone - and it is just Fram in different box.

Amyway.  O'Reilly also has generic 20W50 dino motorcycle oil.  Anybody using it?

I just called O'Reillys on Fri. asking about the different motorcycle brand oil they sell;they mentioned one is their in-house brand 'MasterPro' 10/40wt. and it's $7.99 a qt. and it's got the JASO MA/MA2 which is good for wet clutches.
I'd like to know who supplies it..

Prokop,will you be giving it a go ?  :D

It has been said that ZDDP (zinc) is important for valve tappets of this design and vintage.  My knowledge is general and not specific to SOHC4 Hondas but in other air-cooled valve tappet machines of this vintage, the cams and rocker arms need the zinc.  High ZDDP can be found in certain motor oils.  My personal favorite is Valvoline VR1.  Or...there are additives which can be used.

Motor oil is something that performance car guys can argue about for many pages.

My personal favorite is Valvoline VR1.

Do you have good luck with that in these engines?  Valvoline specifically advocates against VR1 for wet clutch usage.

Well this is interesting.  Thank you.  My experience with these engines and clutches is limited.  I the olden days, in my '75 CB750, I used Castrol.

I normally run Valvoline 20W50 from Walmart but our walmart is hit or miss of they have it.  Since OReilly has quality oil filters I am willing to spend my oil money there.

Last time I cruised the oil aisle at Wally World just regular dino oil was in short supply like they are phasing it out somewhat maybe.

That was my experience as well, practically all synthetic now.
Heck they didn't even have any plain old 10w-40.
They did have Valvoline 4 stroke oil.

I like the Valvoline 4-stroke dino 10/40wt. & I get it from them.
I look for it regularly;if they don't have it I'll get a gallon of Shell Rotella T4 15/40wt.

A new oil thread

So who uses this, iv been thinking of trying it in a few of my bikes. A lot of people use it in there bikes
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Shell-Rotella-T4-Triple-Protection-15W-40-Diesel-Motor-Oil-1-Gallon/181236405?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&wl13=3511&adid=22222222277181236405_117755028669_12420145346&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=501107745824&wl4=pla-294505072980&wl5=1016140&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=local&wl12=181236405&wl13=3511&veh=sem_LIA&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI_-76w9ae_wIVUhWtBh3nfwFMEAQYASABEgIMsPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I've been using Rotella 15w40 T4 for a few years now by recommendations on this forum. Stock engine, stock clutch, stock transmission, etc. I don't race the bike, but I do rev it up to redline often. The clutch doesn't slip. As for the additives, I just assume they do what they're supposed to.

I have no idea if it's better or worse than any other oil, but it works for me. Doesn't stop the leaky head though! Ha ha ha.

O'Reilly carries this one:

https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c/4t/castrol-4t-conventional-motorcycle-motor-oil-20w-50-1-quart/cas8/mc2050?q=motorcycle+oil&pos=1

I have purchased that Castrol bottle with the JASO MA (older bottle) and ran it:I didn't like the shifting and clutch action.
I prefer the oil with the additives JASO MA/MA-2 :I think they put more additives for the trans/clutch in the MA-2.

Per Castrol's website this is for old cars/trucks and not suitable for wet clutch engines.

We have run Rotella T4 15w/40 diesel oil in most of our bikes for a while. It works fine and if the auto parts stores don't have any the truck stops always do. There's also Chevron Delo 400 15w/40 diesel oil and we have also used Bardahl HDD 15w/40 diesel oil, they are a local performance oil company that has been around for decades.
