Cb550 520 chain conversion problems.
« on: May 29, 2023, 08:08:07 PM »
I am in the process of converting to 520 chain but ran into a small problem. The black rear dust cover is now hitting the hub since the sprocket is now thinner. This make the cush drive lock up and not work. I havent seen anyone with this problem or maybe they didn't notice.

Looks like I can run without the dust cover since the bearings are sealed. Anyone do this?

I'm not sure I follow, I looked at the exploded diagram. Would 4 washers space it out enough to work?
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

It won't rub but it will also not seal. There is a large o ring that goes on top of the sprocket and if I use washers to lift up the dust cover it will no longer seal there either.

The center of the big black dust cover hits the bearing retainer when tightened down. There is about a 2-3mm difference in thickness between the 520 and 530 sprocket.

My only question is WHY they have run for half a century fine on 530 so why mess with it changing to unique parts you have to specially order

because it saves some weight.
but i'm with you: chain and sprockets are consumables and dependency on customised parts doesn't make it worth it for a street bike, in my opinion.

The amount of weight that saves just go for a dump before you ride!

Because the stock 530 chain isn't fine. It's rubbing on the oil seal. Yes it's a standard 530 chain.

If its rubbing on the seal something is assembled wrong or bad parts, only ever seen rubbing with 530 O ring chain, i always use 530HD and NEVER had a seal marked

All our bikes have chain marks one them and they use standard chains. I even saw multiple people in this forum stating the same when I was searching my sprocket problem.
