This Weekend RIDE.
« on: June 02, 2023, 11:24:19 AM »
Kudos to Kevin D. 300 miles from home, he is back in my driveway, in Ontario for the Ganaraska 250 “Moto Giro” style event. He bought this K1 new! My son and I will join him in the morning. What a trek for him (2nd time). I’m impressed!

That is awesome, I couldn't imagine riding 300 miles on a trip, and then back.  Hope you have a great weekend!

K1, to me, the holy grail of the CB750.
Back when my butt was young I did many 300+ mile days through the western US, I loved it but I could no more do it now than fly.
Beautiful bike, wow

I’m only here because of John’s generosity and hospitality, and his interest in old motorcycles, specifically CB750s. I don’t believe we have an event like this in Michigan. Do you know of any Eric? CVMG Ganaraska 250: 250km riding through scenic Northumberland and Durham, and you better get all of the turns right, and all of the cones as well, lunch, dinner, trophies and lots of old motorcycles., good guys and gals.
The Saturday ride at Gilmore is the nearest I can think of, and I have been several times but probably won’t make it this year.
Here are a couple old bikes at the hotel, and I know there is a very old 1950 AJS inside that trailer, likely the oldest bike participating. I met the owner Glen, last year. Check out that rear shock on the Moto Guzzi. Brian owns  the BMW. It has only one shock, on the right side. He is riding tourist class as the BMW is an 86. Looks like they used the same paint for the new parking lot, haha. The Honda is under wraps due to tonight’s shower.
Brian and Glen saved me from myself last night, will tell that story later.

One ride that is kind of cool here in Michigan and is going on this week-end takes off from maybe around Galesburg (just east of Kazoo) at Checkered Past motorcyle and goes up to the Mackinaw Bridge staying off the highway as much as possible.  Antique and vintage bikes. Makes my butt sore thinking about it. From Kazoo to the bridge I think is around 286- 300 miles on the highway, about the same you rode the first day. When I was working and running those roads I could do it in 5 hours.

These are empty country roads, mostly asphalt, some gravel, some farmland, some forested. Hills and curves abound, there was a gas station or two, a couple small towns but I didn’t see a traffic signal all day long. And I didn’t have to follow a car or truck that needed to be passed, and nobody nobody pulled out in front of me. Every bit of it nice riding.
Phil Goldsmith of the CVMG Canadian Vintage Motorcycle Group does a bang-up job preparing the route and the route guides. I used a 2 1/2” roll chart in miles. You can get that from Phil in km, you can get that from Phil in a tank bag size. He also prepares a series of four cone challenges that will measure your low speed agility/maneuverability. Phil gets you lunch and dinner for the day. You will be busy from the 8am riders meeting until you finish your coconut crème pie.
I also earned a Century Award from CVMG for  hanging around motorcycling for 100+ years.
That’s my age + my Hondas age , gonna be 123 years pretty soon.

Many thanks to Chris Demaria, Johns son, who was our able leader today. I haven’t yet counted the turns, but Chris didn’t miss one, and while our group was basically four, others will join in from time to time during the day. At times our group was doubled or tripled, with Chris in front.
I have found myself leading from time to time and it is a big load. Thanks Chris

We had a blast! Perfect weather, good friends, great roads, and lots of good food. The club does an amazing job. This was the “10th Annual” and in the past we had +60 entries. 33 yesterday. Covid, and our aging membership are having an impact?

Patsy V. was #14 (the lovely BMW on the left), and part of our “Team” too. John Pepper (#10) squeezed into the photo, when handing out pins.

Great fun.
And yes, it is unlikely that the club will grow. Since these types of events don't involve lots of screen time and self absorbed selfies the younger folks won't be interested. Many don't seem to like old fashioned social gatherings.

Just got a note from Kevin: 60 miles from home!

Update: Home safe. He easily put +500 miles on his K1.

I’m sure he’ll add a few posts, when he wakes up!

I feel like one day I should ride the sidecar to this event.

There were four “rigs” entered and Andrew Dodsworth (1976 cb750A power) won the class and had the best score overall! He won the Event Outright! He and his youngest daughter are notoriously successful in this type of outing!

Today I went to move the K3 (that my son rode). The throttle turned about 90 degrees before engaging the carbs. Looked under the tank and I can see it’s about to let go! Timing is everything……

Good it decided to not let go during the event, would have lost the good leadership by Chris…
