Oil tank lines leaking, replace/repair?
« on: June 02, 2023, 03:56:52 PM »
Went out for a 20 mile ride this afternoon, got home and parked inside garage.

Went back out to the bike 30 mins later to move to its resting spot and discovered a puddle of oil on the right side.

It appears the front most hose is wet, weeping.

What's best way to repair, take them to a hydraulic shop? or just buy new re-po parts?

Anything I need to be aware of if I take them to a hydraulic shop?

Many years ago when I did a frame up on my bike my oil lines were pretty sad. I removed the line from the fittings and called a Hydraulic shop seeing if I could find some hose. They said to come over and they would see what they had. But the minute they found out WHAT the lines were for they said "nope we cannot help due to liability".  In the interval between then and now I have crimped some hydraulic fittings for 5000 psi rated hose and my best guess is it might not clamp well with a normal hose clamp.

I ended up using some kind of automotive stainless braided lines that have a decorative hex nut that covers a normal hose clamp. They have worked for 30 years.

I am thinking that the product line was "Earls Econo Braid"....googling it shows me something similar to what I remember using. Earls makes a hose called "perform o flex" that might be what I used. I have no idea where I got it 30 years ago ;-).

I see CycleX has a fairly utilitarian hose avail and chromed clamps for it.

Totally stunned to see what a NOS set of hoses sells for

The hoses can be a thorny issue!

The hoses appear from time to time at Yamiya.
The K3/4/5/6 return-side hoses often crack nowadays because their angle is slightly 'off' at the tank end, from the beginning. This stresses the hose's rubber liner at the tank's bung, and they crack and weep now.

Things to watch for if making hoses:
Hydraulic shops may have a hard time getting the correct crimp positions to let it fit properly: the issue is expressly that the outer hose's crimp ridges must clear the inner hose's engine fitting (look at them from above and you will see this feature) or else the new crimp ring will interfere with the suction hose's engine fitting. So, if you go to a hose shop, talk with them about maybe using A/C (freon) hose line and crimp rings, and bring pictures (view from above) of the hoses installed at the engine so they understand the issue. I have spent hundred$$ so far trying to replicate these hoses with non-Honda (or USA standard parts), and so far have only been successful at making ones that will fit the 750K0/1/2 bikes, marginally.

While some have installed the chrome-braid-covered oil hoses (found here and there on the 'net) they are a VERY tight fit between engine and frame (bigger OD), and some have weeped oil, causing stripped threads at the engine when the owners kept tightening the 6mm bolts because they thought the fittings were leaking. (Then the bike gets parked and/or the crank bearings spun from low/no oil pressure.) Be aware that the chrome-braided hoses are larger OD, which causes this issue.

About $40 to replace both at the local hydronic shop.

Crimps aren’t exact but you’d be hard pressed to find someone who could point that out.

New hoses a good idea.
I wonder how 40-50 years old oil hoses look inside?
Will crack soon, debris into pump?

What I have seen happen to them, once removed from the bike, is:
1. They crack the inner liner at the most-bent hose.
2. They break right off at the engine fitting!
3. They kink if wrestled out of their snug sites, then they do one of the above.

Got back to work on this.  Ran the bike in the garage for about 20 minutes or so.  It appears the front connecting hose is weeping, or bleeding.

Each time I touch and squeeze the braided line, my fingers are wet with oil.  While it was running it never dripped, but appeared to be getting wet from the inside.

Checking with hydraulics company now to see if they can be repaired, will update later.

My local hydraulic hose company (now gone) recommended using air conditioning hose instead of hydraulic hose because of the thinner outer shell. There is no pressure involved: one is a 0.8 PSI max back to the tank and the other has to sustain suction when the bike is started cold. The suction is what eventually cracks their inner smooth lining, which then weeps like yours does.

Local industrial hose fitting company was able to repair, hopefully they mount and work correctly.

Cost about $68.

Installed new oil lines today, what a pain.

I was a little concerned, had a small kink in the feed line (back hose from oil tank). I let it run in the garage for about 15-20 mins.

No oil leaks and good oil pressure according to gauge on the oil galley.  Tank was getting hot and I could see a little bubbling inside the tank, so I guess the oil line is ok.
